Obituary of Mabel M. Kane
Mrs. Mabel M. Kane, 89, of Canada Lake New York, died June 20, 2006. Born January 6, 1917 in Palmyra, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Reverend Dr. Boyd and Mabel Kyle McCleary. As a young child, her family moved to Bellaire Ohio where she received her education at Indian River Elementary School. She subsequently graduated from Bellaire High School, Oberlin College and received a Masters Degree from Albany State Teachers College in New York. In 1939 she married Vincent Joseph Kane and relocated to Poughkeepsie, New York. Mrs. Kane taught History of English Literature at Poughkeepsie High School and Spackenkill High School in Dutchess County for 22 years. She was head of the English department. Her dedication to her career led to the beginning of a program she initiated for senior students of traveling to Europe, especially England and Scotland, to experience the literary heritage offered abroad. An avid reader, Mabel also enjoyed playing the piano, a talent learned from her mother who was an accomplished pianist from Dunedin, New Zealand. She always looked forward to traveling and as a child, spent summers in Green Lake, New York. In 1952, she moved to nearby Canada Lake where she continued to spend summer. After leaving the Dutchess County area in the 1990?s, she became a more permanent figure to the lake area she loved so deeply. Mabel was also secretary of the Canada Lake Protective Association, and a regular visitor to the Gloversville Free Library, where she enjoyed the many resources available. Survivors include her children: Barbara Kane Russell of Nashville, TN. Michael Kane and William Kane both of Auburndale, MA. She is also survived by a sister; Ruth Mc Cusker of Princeton, N.J. and three grandchildren: Margot and Sara Kane and Alexander Russell, as well as nieces, nephews and three cousins. Mabel was pre-deceased by her husband in 1982, and by a sister Eleanor Howard. There will be no visitation or services. A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.
