Obituary of Alvin Nellis
Mr. Alvin Nellis Jr., 79 of Gloversville, died suddenly on Wednesday at home. Mr. Nellis was born in Johnstown on June 27, 1926, son of the late Alvin and Flossie Sivers Nellis Sr. He was educated in Johnstown schools and employed as a auto mechanic. Early in life he had been employed by area leather mills, the N.A. Taylor Co., and the former FJ&G Railroad. Most of his life was spent with the former Mattice Service Station on West Fulton St. as an auto mechanic. Mr. Nellis was an Army veteran of WW Two. He enjoyed fishing and was a well known bingo player in many of the areas bingo halls, especially St. Mary of Mt. Carmel. He was married March 24, 1947 to Minnie Wells Nellis who pre-deceased him in 1989. Survivors include his children: Rosanne Mc Closkey of Gloversville, Sheila Hurd of Mayfield, Michele Dutcher, Glory Nellis and Tina Vosburgh all of Gloversville, and Marc Nellis of Dolgeville. He is also survived by a sister Grace Schur of Johnstown, several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by three sons, Richard, Scott and Bruce Nellis and a daughter; Dawn Broughton. He was also pre-deceased by several brothers and sisters. A graveside service will be held 10 am Friday at Ferndale Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday today from 5-6 pm at the Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont Street.
