Obituary of Russell Bates

Mr. Russell Bates, age 92, of Gloversville, died Friday, July 21, 2006 at Nathan Littauer Hospital, Gloversville, NY. His death followed a brief illness. He was born February 15, 1914 in Johnstown, the son of the late Manuel and Anna Philips Bates. He was employed at Milligan & Higgins in Johnstown, and then later employed by Liberty Dressing Corp; Gloversville. He was especially fond of working in his garden. Mr. Bates is survived by five children, Barbara A. Thompson Ron and Anna M. Becker of Gloversville, Debra J. Bates of Sun Valley, Idaho, John M. Bates Kellie of Johnstown and Mary E. Jackson Bob of Caroga Lake; three step-daughters, Sharon Paul of Johnstown, Linda Gunneson of Gloversville and Janice Winney of Broadalbin; 18 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins. His wife, Charity Beebe Bates, died in 1999. He was also preceded in death by his brothers Roy, Jay, Walter and George, and by his sister Mary. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm Monday at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St.; Gloversville, where a funeral service will be held at 10:00 Tuesday. Interment will take place at Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 7 Washington Square, Albany, NY 12205.
