Obituary of Shirley J. Coon

Mrs. Shirley Jean Smith Coon, age 74, of Meco, died August 1, 2006 at Mountain Valley Hospice, Gloversville, where she had resided since July 26th. She was born December 23, 1931 in Caroga Lake, NY, the daughter of the late William and Lillian Brooks Smith. She was educated in Wheelerville School. She moved to Meco in 1949 when she was married to the love of her life Robert ?Bob? Coon. They were married for 57 years until his death on January 29, 2006. Shirley was employed in her early years at a local glove making shop. She raised her family and later worked at Chicago Markets in Gloversville. She provided child-care for many local children and was employed as a greeter at Wal-Mart in Gloversville. She was an active member of the Meco Fireman?s Women?s Auxiliary for over 55 years where she served as the secretary at the time of her death. She was also a member of the 50-55 Plus at the YWCA in Gloversville. Shirley was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother with her life being centered around her family. She is survived by three sons, Gregory Coon Lori, Russell Coon Brenda and Darrell Coon Robin all of Meco; a daughter, Sheryl Herron Daniel of Johnstown; six grandchildren, Melissa, Jessica, Christine, Russell Jr. and Stacey Coon, and Jordan Herron; a brother, Kenneth Smith Betty of Oregon; as well as special nieces, nephews, cousins, brothers-in-law and sisters- in-law. In addition to her husband, Shirley was predeceased by a son, Wayne Coon; a brother, Robert Smith; and two sisters, Florence Rumrill and Verna Ellis. The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 pm Wednesday today at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St; Gloversville, where a funeral service will be held at 9:00 am Thursday with the Rev. R. W. Williams officiating. Interment will take place at FernDale Cemetery, Johnstown. In gratitude for the loving care she and her family received during her final days, her family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to Mountain Valley Hospice, 108 Steele Avenue, Gloversville, NY 12078 or to the Meco Vol. Fire Dept.
