Obituary of Herbert W. Steele
Mr. Herbert W. Steele, 81 of Gloversville, died Monday at Mt. Valley Hospice House. He was born June 18, 1925 in Gloversville, son of the late Wilson and Iva Sitts Steele. He was educated in Gloversville schools and an Army veteran of W. W. Two. Mr. Steele was employed at a number of area businesses early in his life including; Bradshaws Silk Mill, Coopers Stove Store, the Water Works, Charm Fabric, a coal delivery co., and as a carpenter for various business. He retired in 1990 from St. Thomas Corp. where he worked as a carpenter for many years. In retirement Herb continued his love of carpentry with Herbs Custom Frames. He was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather. He was an accomplished woodworker who took great pride in the many beautiful pieces of furniture and picture frames he handcrafted for family, friends and customers. He spent his retirement years creating works of art in his shop and doting on his grandchildren. He will be remembered for his hard work and his corny jokes. He loved to tease people and make them laugh. He was a loyal friend to many and always willing to offer a helping hand. Herbert was a member of the Foothills United Methodist Church, where he also sang in the choir and was a member of the Couples Club. He was also a member of the VFW Post 2077 in Gloversville. He is survived by his wife; Sylvia Hill Steele of Gloversville, whom he married August 26, 1944. He is also survived by his children: Deborah A. Gordon and her husband Dennis of Port Clinton, Ohio, Sandra ZL. Watson and her companion Jeffrey Ferri of Gloversville, and William D. Steele and his wife Sandra of Mayfield. Additional survivors include his sister; Marilyn Mc Donald of Jay, N.Y. and his grandchildren: Kristin Gordon, Dean Gordon, Jason Watson, Nicholas Watson, Dustin Watson and Thomas Steele, as well as two cousins. Funeral services will be conducted 1 pm Friday from the Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont Street with Reverend Wayne Jones, Pastor of Foothills United Methodist Church officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday from 4-7 pm. Burial will be Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville. Expressions of sympathy in his memory may be made to Mt.
