Obituary of Walter G. Maines
Walter G. Maines, Sr. of West Main St., Amsterdam, died Sunday September 3, 2006 at St. Mary?s Hospital in Amsterdam.
Born in Amsterdam on October 20, 1931 a son of Floyd and Gladys Bollacker Maines. He was a life long Amsterdam resident and attended Amsterdam and Galway Schools.
Mr. Maines served in the U.S. Navy from 1949 to1953. After his service in the Navy he worked for a time at the former Johnstown Knitting Mills, Mohasco Carpet Mills in Amsterdam, Coleco Industries in Amsterdam, General Foods Co. in Saratoga, Wood and Hyde Leather in Johnstown, Liberty Enterprises in the Machine Shop in Amsterdam. Mr. Maines also worked as a bartender in many taverns in the area and was a school bus driver for the Greater Amsterdam School District.
He enjoyed being with his family and many friends, playing cards, softball, and reading.
Survivors include two sons, Walter Maines, Jr. and his wife Rhonda of Williamsburg, VA and David Maines of West Point, VA; two daughters, Joyce LaBelle and her husband Bob of Panama City, FL and Jeanne Weber and her husband John of Portland Oregon; three brothers, William Maines and his wife Betty of Northville, NY, George Maines and his wife Ruth of North Greece, NY and Charles Maines and his wife Ramona of Northville, NY; grandchildren, Carly Jo, Samara Lynn, Brian Corey, Brady Powell, Victoria and Edwin and one great-grandchild, Finnean Stithan. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. He was pre-deceased by a sister, Corrine Sherman in 2001.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 9, 2006 at 2:00P.M. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, NY with the Rev. Charles Hesslink presiding. Military Honors will take place on Saturday at the funeral home. Inurnment will take place at a later date in the Samuel Stratton Saratoga National Cemetery Columbarium Wall, Schuylerville, NY. The family will receive relatives and friends on Saturday beginning at 1:00P.M. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to G.A.V.A.C., P.O. Box 11, Park St, Amsterdam, NY 12010.
