Obituary of John W. Madden
Mr. John W. Madden, 77 of Gloversville, died Tuesday at St. Mary?s Hospital in Amsterdam.
He was born September 4, 1929 in Amsterdam, son of the late William and Caroline Weaver Madden. Mr. Madden was educated in local schools and a graduate of Fulton-Montgomery Community College.
He had been employed as a Postal Clerk at the Gloversville Post Office for many years, retiring in 1985. Mr. Madden served in the Army from 1952 to 1954 and was past Chaplain of the VFW Post 2077 in Gloversville. Other memberships include: past Chief Ranger of the former Ancient Order of Foresters, Johnstown Moose Lodge, Gloversville Masonic Lodge, Christ Lutheran Church Choir and Church Council, Meco School PTA past president, TOPPS, and the U.S. Postal Union. Mr. Madden was an avid reader and outdoorsman, and enjoyed family card games. After retirement, he also helped out part-time at Nethaway?s, transporting automobiles from various destinations.
He is survived by his wife, Arlene Hare Madden of Gloversville, whom he married August 21, 1948, his children, Catherine Peck Carlos Fernandez of Johnstown, Mary Don Allen of Floris, Iowa, Penny Keith McLemore of Philadelphia, Mississippi and Carole Madden Patrick Calhoun of Gloversville. He is also survived by a sister, Helen Schreivogal of Johnstown, and his grandchildren: Nadine Medina, Michael Madden, Rachael Klyn, Sabrina, Angela an Brook Allen, Trenton Archer, Matthew Smith, Sharon Darling, Ashley and Stevie McLemore, Patrick Calhoun II, Jason, Joseph, Cissy, Bruce, Jazmyn and Deborah Calhoun and Bambie Cross. Several great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins survive, as well as a brother-in-law, Earl Hare of Mayfield, and a sister ?in- law, Marilyn Andrews of Amsterdam. Mr. Madden was pre-deceased by a brother, Timothy Madden and by a sister, Maryanne Madden.
A Memorial Service will be held 11 am Friday at the Christ Lutheran Church, 1 W. Montgomery St. Johnstown, with Reverend L. David Almleaf, Pastor, officiating. Mr. Madden was a participant in the Anatomical Gift Program at Albany Medical College. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 260 Osborne Rd. Loudonville, N.Y. 12211, or to the American Lung Association, 5096 Commercial Dr. Yorkville, N.Y. 13495. Arrangements are by the Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont Street, Gloversville.
