Obituary of Sadie J. Sargalis
Sadie J. Sargalis, 91, of East Main Street, passed away Sunday morning at St. Mary?s Hospital after a brief illness.
She was born in Amsterdam on December 14, 1914, the daughter of Justin and Agota Skinulis Luksis; she lived here her entire life and was educated in local schools. Earlier in life, Sadie worked for the Bigelow Sanford Carpet Company. She later was a homemaker and along with raising her family, assisted her husband in the operation of the former Sargalis Auto Repairs on East Main Street. Upon the sudden passing of her husband, the business closed in 1981. In her later years, she enjoyed traveling to Florida and spending summers at her Great Sacandaga Lake residence. Her legacy to her family was that of a wonderful mother, grandmother and most recently great grandmother. Sadie was always the first to lend a helping hand and no task was too great or unpleasant for her. Her family and friends will truly miss her wonderful Easter babka that she lovingly shared with them.
A lifelong communicant of St. Casimir?s Roman Catholic Church, Sadie was a member of its Ladies Auxiliary, the Living Rosary Society and St. Casimir?s Seniors.
On Feb. 21, 1981, her beloved husband, Anthony W. Sargalis predeceased her. Also, Sadie lost her daughter, Antoinette C. Knapik on Dec. 18, 2002, as well as sisters, Edna Luksis and Frances Kotarski.
Her loving family includes her daughter, Patricia C. and her husband Robert VanWert of Hagaman; her brother, Joseph Luksis of Scotia; grandchildren, Karen Knapik ? Scalzo, Michael J. Knapik, Robert Anthony VanWert and Susan VanWert-Kilinski; great grandchildren, Ashley and Kyle Scalzo, Alexa Knapik, Samuel Anthony and Thomas James VanWert, and Michael, Matthew and Brayden Kilinski; nieces and nephews.
