Obituary of Kenneth Sweeney

Kenneth Sweeney, 90, Formerly of Main Street, Fonda, died Tuesday, November 21, 2006 at the Nathan Littauer Hospital Extended Care Facility. Born on September 28, 1916 he was the son of the late James and Almira VanLone Sweeney. He was a lifelong area resident and attended local schools. Mr. Sweeney was employed for many years for the Anderson Instrument Company as an Instrument Technician, retiring in 1980. During his lifetime, Mr. Sweeney was affiliated with many organizations and helped out his community. He was the former chief and a life member, and the oldest member of the Ft. Hunter Volunteer Fire Department. He also was the former commissioner of the Ft. Hunter Fire District. He was a member of the Gloversville Moose Lodge, the Reid Hill Fish & Game Club, the Tribes Hill Fish & Game Club and the Light Infantry of the Brigade of the American Revolution. He also served as board member of the Mohawk Valley Library Association, Trustee of the Town of Florida School District #13, Democratic Committeemen of the Town of Florida, and was the Town?s Constable. He was also one of the founding members of GAVAC, and attended Village Bible Church in Fonda. Survivors include his two sons, David R. Sweeney of Gloversville and James K. Sweeney of Atlanta, Georgia; a son in law, Dick Grosse of Fonda; two sisters, Mildred Bruce and Gertrude House, both of Gloversville; one brother, Leland ?Micky? Sweeney of Ephratah; two grandchildren, George Grosse and his wife Lesa of Fonda and Ellen Tryon of Fultonville; four great grandchildren, Brock and Jordan Grosse and Lynn and Morgan Tryon; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his spouses, Catherine Wrobel and Louise Albrecht; his daughter Eleanor Grosse; three sisters, Dorothy Post, Lena Stergas and Thelma Nethaway; and three brothers, Willard, LeRoy and Donald Sweeney. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 25, 2006 at 11a.m. at the Jackson & Betz Funeral Home, 15 Main Street, Fultonville with the Rev. Wade Prime presiding. Interment will take place in Pine Grove Cemetery, Tribes Hill. A calling hour will precede the funeral from 10 until 11. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ft. Hunter Volunteer Fire Department or to the Ft. Hunter Free Library in care of the funeral home.
