Obituary of William A. Hammer
Mr. William A. Hammer, age 84 of Gloversville, died Friday evening, April 27, 2007 at Nathan Littauer Hospital Nursing Home, Gloversville.
He was born November 21, 1922 in Cobleskill, the son of the late Charles and Estelle Thompson Hammer. A graduate of Gloversville, William served in the Navy during World War II from 1944 to 1946 in the Asiatic Pacific Theater of Operations.
Mr. Hammer was first employed by City National Bank in Gloversville, then at General Electric Company in Schenectady. He then served in the Navy, and when discharged in 1944 he worked at Harold Smith Leather Company in Gloversville for many years. He retired from Kiernan Glove Company in Johnstown where he also worked for many years.
William was a member of Sacred Heart Church and the 55 Plus Senior Citizens Club. He enjoyed bowling, and was a baseball enthusiast. He enjoyed his trips to New England, especially to the ocean.
He was married on October 18, 1940 to Florence M. Guinup who survives and lives in Gloversville. He is also survived by a daughter, Florence A. Brothers Donald E. of Scotia; a sister, Mildred Chase of Johnstown; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his brothers Wayne Hammer and Charles Hammer, and his sister Madlyn Shutts.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 11am to 1pm Monday at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St; Gloversville, where a prayer service will follow at 1pm with the Very Rev. Donald Czelusniak officiating. Interment will take place at FernDale Cemetery, Johnstown. Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to Sacred Heart Church, 189 Kingsboro Ave; Gloversville, or to Mountain Valley Hospice, 108 Steele Avenue, Gloversville, NY 12078.
