Obituary of Marie C. Brown
Mrs. Marie C. Brown, age 88, a lifelong Mayfield resident, died Sunday, September 9, 2007 at Fulton County Residential Health Care Facility, following a long illness.
She was born August 16, 1919 in Mayfield, the daughter of the late Harold Jack and Mabel Blowers Close. A 1937 graduate of Gloversville High School, Marie also attended the former Gloversville, Business School. For 29 years she held various positions in the office at Niagra Mohawk Power Corporation in Gloversville, and eventually became the first female meter reader for the company in New York State. She retired from there in 1979.
Mrs. Brown was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Gloversville. She was an avid collector and refinisher of antiques. An active outdoors person, she enjoyed gardening and working on the family property on Lakeside Drive in Mayfield.
Marie was married on December 26, 1937 to Robert G. Brown, who died November 26, 2005.
She is survived by three children, Roxana Vuskalns of Mayfield, Robert L. Brownof Riverside, RI and Edward L. Brown of Mayfield; a brother, Benedict Close of Albany; a half-brother, Peter Closeof Mayfield; seven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her sister, Earlene Hart, and her half-brother, Harland Close.
Private services and cremation with burial will take place at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimers Association, 85 Watervliet Ave; Albany, NY 12206.
