Obituary of Walter Turling
Walter Turling, 85, of Fort Plain, took his last voyage as he entered into rest on Saturday morning at home with his family by his side.
Born in Amsterdam on May 20, 1922, he was the son of Peter and Edna Turling. He was a lifelong area resident and a graduate of Fort Plain High School Class of 1940.
Walter entered the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Great Neck, Long Island, where he graduated as a Marine Engineer in 1944. He sailed in all theaters of war- Iraq, Brussels at the Battle Of The Bulge, Philippines, Okinawa and several other active war zones.
He returned home in 1946 and remodeled the family restaurant, the Ron-D Voo Inn and assisted his parents in the operation of the business.
He married Nancy Cheney on December 4, 1948 and had two daughters, Deborah and Jan.
In 1956, Walter built the Park Motel in Sacandaga Park NY which he operated with his wife Nancy for forty years.
He had a great love for the outdoors and took great pride in maintaining his properties. He was a successful deer hunter, an enthusiastic sports fan and enjoyed listening to ? good? music.
Walter was a member of the McNulty Society of the US Merchant Marines, the Knights Of Columbus , American Legion, VFW Post 3275 and a communicant of St. James Roman Catholic Church in Fort Plain.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Turling and his daughter Jan Turling of Amsterdam, NY.
He was predeceased by his daughter Deborah Turling in 2006.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Mass Of Christian Burial which will take place Thursday , 1100 am at St. James Catholic Church, Fort Plain. Interment will follow with military honors in the Fort Plain Cemetery. Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 260 Osborne Rd., Albany, NY 12211. The family has entrusted his arrangements to the care of the Lenz & Betz Funeral Home, 69 Otsego Street, Canajoharie.
