Obituary of Grace M. Gilbert
Mrs. Grace M. Gilbert, a local artist and optimist died at the age of 98.
Born on July 4, 1918 in Amsterdam, NY she was the daughter of the late Anthony and Mary Petruccione Cermola. Grace attended local schools, and went on to Graduate from Syracuse University after 3 years of instruction. While at college, Grace met the love of her life, Clinton Wayne Gilbert. Together for over 40 years, they had an exciting life together. Raising a family in Westchester, Grace was able to teach her passion of Art and take in all that New York had to offer and provide a wonderful life to her two sons.
An educator for over 33 years, Grace taught Art Education in Gilboa- Conesville and the Pelham School Districts. She had a passion for Art, and enjoyed sharing her stories and expertise with anyone who was willing to learn. For several years, she taught and volunteered at the Walter Elwood Museum.
An extensive traveler, Grace explored Italy, Egypt, China, Russia, Greece, Morocco, England, Spain, France and many other destinations. She lived life to the absolute fullest and had extraordinary life.
Grace had three favorite sayings: "From the day of your birth, until you're riding in a hearse, there's nothing so bad it couldn't be worse." "The only constant in life is change." "We need old friends to help us grow old and new friends to help us stay young."
She is survived by her two sons, Timothy (JoAnn) Gilbert and Thomas (Linda) Gilbert; one step grandson; nieces, nephews and cousins.
Grace enjoyed decorating, painting and sharing her love of Art until she was 98 years old. She enjoyed this wonderful world filled with color and people- and her paintings were her expression of it all.
Relatives and friends are invited to Grace's Final Art Exhibit and Showcase on Thursday, January 19 2017 from 2 until 4p.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam. The exhibit will feature some of her favorite works, and some that are exclusive and have never been seen before.
