Obituary of Mary Jane Cervera
Mary Jane Cervera answered the call from the Lord to join her husband in God?s Kingdom of heaven Tuesday morning as a result of having recently suffered a massive stroke.
Born on July 31, 1911 in Amsterdam to Julius and Theresa Kelly DeStefano, she was 96 years of age.
Mary Jane attended St. Mary?s Institute and Amsterdam High School where she graduated in 1929. On November 11th of that year, she married Alfonso Cervera.
Mary Jane sewed gloves for Charles Kennedy at Fownes Brothers when they were located on Grove Street. When World War II broke out, she sewed gloves for Carmella Rukstinat at a location which after the war became Hosner Motors. Following the end of the war, Mrs. Cervera returned to Fownes and remained there for one year and then joined her husband in the operation of the Cervera Pharmacy on East Main Street where she stayed until the firm closed it?s doors in October of 1988.
Mrs. Cervera was of the Roman Catholic faith and a member of St. Michael The Archangel Church, the former Covent Auxiliary and past president of the Rosary Altar Society. She was also a member of the Elk?s Emblem Club and a sustaining member of St. Mary?s Hospital Auxiliary and the Columbian Social Club Auxiliary. Mary Jane was an avid Yankee?s fan.
Her beloved husband, Alfonso J. Cervera predeceased her on December 3, 1998.
She is survived by her son Frank A. Cervera and his wife Winifred of Amsterdam; step grandchildren, William, David, John Gallagher and Mary Lee LaFreniere; eight step great grandchildren and nieces and a nephew also survive.
Mrs. Cervera was predeceased by her parents, and husband, a brother, Louis Stephans of Amsterdam and sister, Virginia Cocimano of Washington, D.C.
Services are Thursday at 10:45am at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, followed by a con-celebrated Funeral Mass at 11:30 am at St. Michael the Archangel Church. Fr. O. Robert DeMartinis, principal celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Michael?s Cemetery. Calling hours are today from 4-7 pm at the funeral home. Contributions may be made in her memory to St. Mary?s Institute, Upper Church Street, Amsterdam.
