Obituary of Jonathan Terry

Jonathan Terry, Jr., 86 years old, formerly of W. Galway, died Sunday at Nathan Littauer Nursing Home. Mr. Terry was born August 12, 1921 in Amsterdam, a son of John and Elizabeth Doak Terry, and was a life long resident of the Amsterdam area. Mr. Terry served with the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was stationed on the USS Murphy and the USS Somers. Mr. Terry was employed by the former Bigelow-Sanford Carpet Mills, the White Mop Wringer Co. and by the former Amsterdam Savings Bank where he worked for 30 years. While at the bank he was Head teller, Assistant Treasurer and Branch Manager. Mr. Terry was a member of the former Second Presbyterian Church, now known as United Presbyterian Church in Amsterdam and served on the Session of the church. Mr. Terry was also an Elder and Deacon of the church. He was a former member of the Ft. Plain Rotary Club. He married the former Ruth Jean Ashcroft on September 7, 1946. She died February 18, 2001. Mr. Terry is survived by three sons: The Rev. Dr. David J. Terry of Amelia Island, Fla., Robert J. Terry of W. Galway, N.Y. and Philip R. Terry of Broadalbin, N.Y.; two daughters: Jeanne R. Giebink of Yorktown, VA. And Jacqueline R. Ellsworth of S. Glens Falls, N.Y.; his brother James Terry of Albany, N.Y.; his brother-in-law: Seymour Young of Amsterdam, N.Y.; 15 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, 1 niece, 2 nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his brother Gerald Terry and his sister Florence Young. Funeral services will be held 11:00am Wednesday at Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam. Burial is in Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday from 9:30 until 11:00am at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made: United Presbyterian Church, 25 Church Street, Amsterdam, NY 12010.
