Obituary of Edith M. Martin
Mrs. Edith M. Weiss Martin, age 88 of Broadalbin, died peacefully on Saturday morning, January 5, 2008 with her family at her side at St. Mary's Hospital Amsterdam, following a brief illness.
She was born April 4, 1919 in Schenectady, the daughter of the late Robert and Minnie Tesnow Weiss. Raised in Amsterdam, Edith was a 1937 graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School and was a member of the Second Presbyterian Church. She later lived in Vail Mills where she and her husband James B. Martin owned and operated the former Martin?s General Store for many years until her retirement in the late 1980?s. Following her retirement Edith took a home health aide course at FMCC, and later was a caregiver for several area residents.
Edith is survived by six children, James R. Martin Jean of Batavia, Ronald L. Martin Sandra of Gloversville, Joanne Loucks Thomas W. and Karen L. Horton Dennis of Amsterdam, Bette L. Davison Bruce of Broadalbin and Susan D. Williams of Saratoga Springs; 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1970, also by her brothers Alvin Weiss and Charles B. Weiss, and her friend and companion of 20 years, George Menge.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm Monday at Jeffords & Stewart Funeral Home, 85 W. Main St; Broadalbin, where a funeral service will be held at 1 pm Tuesday with the Rev. Bonnie Orth officiating. Interment will take place at Fairview Cemetery, Amsterdam. Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the charity of your choice.
