Obituary of David J. Evens

David James Evens, 70, passed away peacefully on Friday January 20th at home, surrounded by his loving wife, children, grandchildren and best friend Barbara DiMarco (aka 'his second wife'). David was born in Gloversville, New York on October 4, 1946 to the late Alverton Evens and Elizabeth (Lamphere) Evens and raised by his late Grandmother Florence Gotts. David graduated from Johnstown High School in 1965 and worked for General Electric in Schenectady as an electrician for 37 years, retiring in 2002. One of his favorite duties was maintaining the light bulbs on the marquee General Electric sign that overlooks Schenectady. He married Bernadine Kane, who survives, on July 1, 1967 and together they raised four children; LoriAnn (Michael) Hauser, Tami (Todd) Lee, David Jr (Tammi), and Michael (Amanda) Evens. He was "Papa" to grandchildren Eric & Jarrett Lucas, Kaitlyn & Patrick Lee, Katie & Kerri Hauser, Alexandria & David Evens III, McKrae Evens and great granddaughter Briella Lucas. He was a past coach & board member of the Gloversville Little League, Juniorette Drill Team, GHS Field Band, Holy Name Society of St. Mary's Church and Knights of Columbus. He was also an avid bowler having bowled in several local leagues and a great horse shoe player. He was the ultimate handy-man and built his own home in the Hamlet of Meco and those of two of his children, as well as renovation projects for countless other family members and friends. He enjoyed being surrounded by his family, trips to the casino and attending his grand children's sporting, dance & school events. His house was always open to other children, as David and his family took in children from the Turning Point Program/Family Counseling Center, Fresh Air Kids, and Foreign Exchange Students from Mexico. In addition to his wife, children and grandchildren, David is survived by sister Donna (Dennis) Vosburgh & Joseph Evens, several nieces, nephews, cousins, the DiMarco Family and was predeceased by brothers Daniel and Joseph, best friend Michael DiMarco Jr., Michael & Dorothy DiMarco Sr. and father and mother in law Bernard J. & Evelyn Kane. The family will receive relatives and friends from 4 to 7 pm Monday, January 23rd at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St; Gloversville, where Prayer Service will take place 9:15 am Tuesday, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am at the Church of the Holy Spirit, 151 S. Main St; Gloversville. Interment will take place at Ferndale Cemetery, Johnstown. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to NYOH Community Cancer Foundation, 1700 Riverfront Center, Amsterdam, NY 12010 or to Ronald McDonald House of Albany, 139 South Lake Avenue, Albany, NY 12208 or to Mountain Valley Hospice, 108 Steele Avenue, Gloversville, NY 12078.
