Obituary of William B. Charles

William B. Charles III, 87, Guy Park Avenue, passed away Tuesday evening at the Edward L. Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility where he had recently been a patient. Born on June 22, 1920 in Amsterdam, New York, he was the son of the late William B. and Marion Garbutt Charles Jr. He was a life long Amsterdam resident. He was a graduate of the Wilbur H. Lynch High School class of 1938. He was also a graduate of the Green Mountain College. William was a U.S. Navy Veteran of WWII and Korean War. He was employed as an electrician with the family business Swart & Son Electrical in Amsterdam, New York. William was a member of St. Luke's Evangelical Lutheran Church; Walter Elwood Museum; John J. Wyzomirski Post 701 American Legion; life member of the Disabled American Veterans; member of the Amsterdam Masonic Lodge No. 84, F. & A. M.; 50 year member as a Shriner; Member of the Sun City Shriners Club; 50 year member of the I.B.E.W. Local 236; life member of the Montgomery County Historical Society; member of the Amsterdam ARC and a member of the Antlers Country Club. William was an Eagle Scout and active with Troop 25 out of St. Luke's Church. On December 6, 1942 he married the former Helen Swart. Besides his wife survivors include two sons, William B. Charles IV Patty of Buffalo, NY and Lott S. Charles of Gloversville, NY; three grandchildren, William B. Charles V, Michelle Herbeck and Ellen Ashley Charles; a niece Pam Kruger Bob of San Antonio, Texas; and a brother-in-law Clarence J. Swart, Jr. June of San Antonio, Texas. Funeral services will be private and will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial of William's cremated remains will take place in spring at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Tribes Hill, NY with full military honors.
