Obituary of Frederick Smith

Frederick Fred "Pucky" Smith, 87, of Codaughrity Road, went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at St. Mary's Hospital with his family by his side. He was born February 15, 1921 a son of the late Percy and Alice Smith. He was raised and attended schools in St. Johnsville. Fred left high school to enter the US NAVY during WWII and received his training in the Great Lakes Naval Training Base. Following his training, he served on the USS Calvert APA32 and then participated in the invasion of North Africa and Sicily. He was also part of the invasions of Marshall Islands and Gilbert Island. He was decorated several times and transferred to the USS Porter DD800 where he remained for the duration of his time in service, making nuisance raids on Japan in the Curly Islands. In November of 1956, he married Ida Mary Flanders, together they lived in St. Johnsville and were active in the Fire Department. She predeceased him in November of 1979. Fred continued with the Fire Dept. until May 7, 1983, when he married the former Nancy Crewell and relocated with his family to Glen, NY. Fred's loving family includes his wife, Nancy Smith of Glen, his sons, Craig Rose Smith, Sr. of Dolgeville, Ronald Janet Crewell of Glen, Douglas Crewell of Texas, and Stephen Erin Smith, US ARMY Fort Drum, NY, his daughters, Laurie John Barney, Jr. of St. Johnsville, and Lynda Eugene Russell of Glen, and his sister, Alice Jean Thompson of Horseheads, NY. Fred is also survived by eighteen grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00PM on Sunday, March 30, 2008 at Glen Reformed Church with Pastor Joyce Jennings, conducting. The family will receive relatives and friends one half-hour prior to the Service, beginning at 2:30PM, at the church.
