Obituary of Alice M. Lawton

Miss Alice M. Lawton, age 94 of Gloversville, died Sunday, May 18, 2008 at Nathan Littauer Hospital, Gloversville. She had been a resident of the Getman memorial Home for the past five years. She was born on July 30, 1913 in Albany, NY, the daughter of the late Matthew and Elly May Knights Lawton. A 1930 graduate of Gloversville High School, Alice attended the former Gloversville Business School. She was employed as a bookkeeper for 27 years by the Geraldine Novelty Company and the Dayton Glove Corporation, both formerly of Gloversville. She retired in 1981. Miss Lawton was an active member of Emmanuel Baptist Church of Gloversville. She served her church as Church Clerk, Secretary/Treasurer of Christian Education, Sunday School Teacher and as Librarian. Survivors include three nephews, Philip Lawton Marcia of Felton, DE; Andrew Lawton Lori of Amsterdam, NY and Richard Lawton of Orlando, FL; four grand-nieces, Naomi Lawton of Rochester, NY; Taylor Lawton of Amsterdam, NY; Jessica Soult of Portland, OR and Penny Littrell of Keizer, OR and numerous cousins. Alice was preceded in death by her brother Stephen K. Lawton, whose wife Lois Lawton survives in Zephyr Hills, FL. The family will receive relatives and friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 28th at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St; Gloversville, where a funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. with Pastor Peter R. Ellis officiating. Interment will take place at Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda. Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to Emmanuel Baptist Church, 12 James Street, Gloversville, NY 12078.
