Bill Davis posted a condolence
Monday, May 26, 2008
Words that I think of when I reflect on the life of Lowell W. Franklin from the perspective of a child and then a grown adult. By Bill Davis, grandson.
Dedication: I knew Lowell when he worked at Baronet Litho and Noteworthy; I even recall that my grandfather worked for a brief period of time for Baronet Litho in retirement. He felt good that he was wanted for some part-time work.
I never recall grandpa taking a day off from work because of sickness; I recall a man dedicated to his work to support his family.
Commitment: Support to his family and country with his service in the Air Force. There are not enough words to describe his love and commitment to his family and country.
Volunteerism: As a volunteer myself today, I now understand how important it is to serve others so that we may make the world a better place. Lowell volunteered for numerous veterans groups, and, as a kid, I also thought it was great that he volunteered for the Special Olympics. Upon reflection, I would have liked it if my grandfather came to more of my baseball, football, and track meets. In the grand scheme of the world â?? in my view as an adult â?? I now understand and fully appreciate the values of volunteerism.
Leadership: I saw my grandfather as a leader of his family and veterans organizations. I recall fondly how I interviewed Lowell for a school project to talk to him about his role as the Montgomery County commander. As a 7th /8th grader, Montgomery County seemed like a big place and I was very proud of my grandfather. Lowell spoke with conviction and pride of his volunteer work.
Patriotism: There were always signs of the American flags and patriotic symbols when I came to my grandparents home. I was reminded of this by seeing so many patriotic pins on his hats; the flag was always flying; and veterans affairs items and literature were throughout the house.
Humble: Despite of all of Lowellâ??s accomplishments and service - to me - he was a humble man who did not talk to me much about his achievements unless I asked specifically. He asked how I was doing; what I doing. For those that know me, I am still working on being humble as my Aunt Patti recently reminded me.
Civic Mindedness: As an adult, most of my discussions with grandpa centered around politics and world affairs. He had passionate opinions, and I did my best to try to temper them with my views.
Frugal: By example, my grandfather taught me the value of saving; only spending money when you have it; and focusing on needs rather than wants. These are all values that are lost in the 21st century by many â?? especially those in my age group 30â??s.
I thank my grandfather for instilling these values in me; I will miss him, but I will always remember and honor what Lowell W. Franklin stood for in his life. Finally, I would be remiss if I did not also thank my Aunt Laura, grandmother - Virginia, mom - Lydia, and my Uncle Frank, who each in their personal way had an influence on me. But on this occasion, my grandfather takes the center stage.
Rest in Peace Grandpa. Love your grandon, Bill

GOODBYE MY FRIEND
Time has passed
in many a days,
Years have gone
and went away.
Seasons change
as we do to,
But We'll neverforget
knowing you.
you were so kind
withall your words,
We'll always remember
thosewe heard.
The things you askedwere never harsh,
And you showed concern
from the heart.
Father has called you
away from this time,
We thank him for you
as a friend of ours.
Peace will now be
at your side,
As you walk with him
in the Heavenly Sky.
We'll all miss you Lowell

My heartfelt condolences to the family of Lowell Franklin. I met Lowell on the "Memories of El Monte" website. He was the first to welcome me to the website. He was always such a kind and caring soul -- alway positive and complimentary to all. Lowell was very witty and full of fun, and was the ultimate gentleman. His e-mails and postings on our high school alumni website will be sorely missed. As one alumni said, "the website will never be the same". You can be very proud of your husband, father, and grandfather and know that he has many friends from all graduating classes at El Monte. I will always remember Lowell. My prayers are with you all.

Dear Virginia, Lydia, Laura & Lowell,
My heartfelt sympathy to all of you on the loss of Lowell Sr..I spent a good part of my teen years at the Franklin house, and always considered Lowell and Virginia my second parents. Their home was always open to me, as well as their hearts. I will always think so fondly of all the times I spent with your family. Your Dad was one of the best men I ever knew, and I will never forget all those trips up to Woodworth Lake to visit "Dad & Frankie". May he rest in peace, and may your memories help to carry you through this difficult time.

Dad,
I don't think anyone truly knows the importance of their parents until they feel the loss of one themselves. A part of who I am died
when my dad drew his last breath. From Scotland to New York my dad did what he thought was best for our family. As a member of the Air Force there were things he could never discuss. I am sure there were things he took with him when he went to glory. To my Mom and sisters, know we will get through it. To his friends and E mail buddies, I thank you for your frienship to him. Don and Barb, thanks for coming, he loved you both.
To my Dad, I know you are in heaven in a glorified body with no pain. I praise GOD for his mercy and LOVE.
I will miss you, but we will meet again in heaven. Thank you for your love and guidance. Thank you for your service to our great country. I salute you.
Far Winds and Following Seas
Your Son,
Lowell Jr.

The Franklin's took me under their wing in Zweibrucken, Germany when I was a 19 year kid in the summer of 1960. I think I spent every major holiday in the Franklin home for the next three years.
While "Frank" was my boss, he was also my good friend and stand in "father." Ginny called me "Son" and I called her "Mom."
Once while traveling through New York, my wife and I stopped in Tribes Hill to visit the Franklins. I still remember that they gave up their own bed to give us a place to sleep overnight.
For 46 years since I left the Air Force, the Roeders and Franklins have exchaned geetings at least once a year. Usually at Christmas.
Then there were Frank's emails. Always the patriot, always the champion of good sense values.
Now the 19 year kid is 67. But, never a year has gone by without a loving thought for Lowell Franklin and his family.
God bless you, Frank.
