Obituary of Alvin C. Eaton
Mr. Alvin C. "Cal" Eaton, 89, of Caroga Lake, died Wednesday at Nathan Littauer Nursing Home. Mr. Eaton was born January 9, 1919 in Gloversville, the son of the late Delbert and Bertha Bowler Eaton. He attended Pennington Preparatory School and was a 1938 graduate of Gloversville High School. Mr. Eaton subsequently graduated from Bentley College School of Accounting. After serving his country in the Army Air Force during WWII, he began work in the accounting field for New York State. Most of his life he was employed as an accountant for George Johns Manufacturing in Johnstown, retiring in 1984.
"Cal" had been a Little League coach in Gloversville and was an area bowler for many years. An avid golfer, he was a member of the Nick Stoner Golf Club. A devoted fan of his children and grandchildren, he rarely missed their sporting events.
His memberships include St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Church, Johnstown Moose Lodge, V.F.W. Post 2077, the Nick Stoner Sr. Citizens and a former member of the local chapter of the China Burma India veterans group.
He is survived by his wife, Marie Derrico Eaton, of Caroga Lake, whom he married May 25, 1947. He is also survived by his children: Russell J. Eaton of Albany, Barbara Valovic James, James A. Eaton and Mary R. Eaton, all of Gloversville.
Additional survivors include his grandchildren: Kristin Eaton Riley, Anthony Eaton, Jennifer DeSorbo Baird William, Shelly Valovic Fennessey Daniel, Michael Valovic Nicole, Amanda Eaton Mason Ryan, and Allison Eaton. Mr. Eaton is further survived by great grandchildren; Leah Marie Valovic and Braeden Daniel Fennessey, as well as nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by a sister, Eleanor Eaton and a brother, Preston Eaton.
A prayer service will be held 9:15 am Saturday from the Kobuskie-Konik Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St. and at 10 am a Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Church with Reverend Donald Czelusniak, pastor, as celebrant. The family will receive friends on Friday from 4-7 pm. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Johnstown .Expressions of sympathy in his memory may be made to Nathan Littauer Nursing Home, 99 E. State St. Gloversville, or to St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Church, 149 S. Main St. Gloversville.
