Obituary of Charles J. MacVean

Mr. Charles J. MacVean, age 96 of Petoff Garden Apartments, Gloversville, died Monday morning, June 23, 2008 at Ellis Hospital, Schenectady. He was born on May 6, 1912 in Broadalbin, a son of the late Percy and Pearlia Dopp MacVean. A 1929 graduate of Broadalbin Central School, Charles also graduated from the Broadalbin Teachers Training Class in 1931. He continued his education at Oneonta Normal School where he graduated in 1935. He took many courses at various schools including Special Education at Saint Rose College. Mr. MacVean was first employed as a Teacher and Principal at a four-room school in the Ballston Spa School District. He later taught at a rural Mayfield school. During World War II he was a Precision Inspector at General Electric Co. in Schenectady. Following the war he was a salesman at House Beautiful and also at The Magic Carpet, and later at Sears Roebuck and Co; all in Gloversville. He then taught in the Broadalbin School District for a short period of time. Charles was the first Executive Director of The Lexington Training Center from 1964 until 1969. He then returned to continue his education and attended SUNY Oneonta where received his Bachelor's Degree in 1970. He then taught for five years at BOCES in Johnstown until his retirement in 1974. Following his retirement he became Principal at a BOCES operated school in Tribes Hill for a brief period of time. He was a member of North Main Street United Methodist Church and a former member of the Gloversville Rotary Club. Charles was married on June 6, 1941 to Margaret M. Knapp who survives. They lived in Gloversville for 48 years until 1991 when they moved to Petoff Garden Apartments. He is also survived by two sons: James H. MacVean Linda LeClair of Albany and John C. MacVean Paula of Canton, IL; three brothers: Clarence MacVean and Arthur MacVean of Johnstown and Donald MacVean of Amsterdam; two sisters: Marion Hughes of Amsterdam and Ruth Beyer of Broadalbin; four grandchildren, seven great-grandchild, many nieces, newphews and cousins. Charles was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters: Robert MacVean, Ross MacVean, Clement MacVean, Percy MacVean Jr; Hazel Brownell, Thelma Lester and Grace Everest. The family will receive relatives and friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Petoff Garden Apartments, 305 County Highway 155, where a memorial service will follow at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Christopher Hamm officiating. Cremation took place at Park View Crematorium, Schenectady. Memorial contributions may be made to the North Main St. United Methodist Church, 316 N. Main St; Gloversville, NY 12078. Arrangements have been entrusted to Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, Gloversville.
