Obituary of Dorothy Holmes Miller

Mrs. Dorothy Holmes Miller, age 86 of Gloversville, died Sunday, June 29, 2008 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, NC. She was born on June 23, 1922 in Gloversville, the daughter of the late Russell H. and Mildred Hornett Holmes. A graduate of Gloversville High School, Dorothy also graduated as Valedictorian of the former Brodean Business School in Gloversville. Mrs. Miller was employed as an Executive Secretary for the Schine Corporation, later in the law office of Haviland & Ferguson, and also in her husband's leather business office, all in Gloversville. She was a lifetime member of North Main Street United Methodist Church where she was a former Sunday School Teacher and member of the Women's Society. She was also a member of Pine Brook Golf Club. On July 11, 1942 she married Charles W. Miller. After Charles retired they spent winters together in Vero Beach, Florida. Charles died on April 20, 1996. Dorothy is survived by two daughters: Gary Ann Stevens John H. and Mary Lou Miller, all of Wilmington, NC; a brother, John "Jack" Holmes Beverly of Gloversville; a sister, Marjorie Croucher of Gloversville; two granddaughters: Cynthia Louise Smith and Lisa Ann Courtney; four great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins. The family will receive relatives and friends from 12 noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St; Gloversville, where a funeral service will follow at 1:00 p.m. with the Rev. Christopher Hamm officiating. Interment will take place at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville.
