Dear Esther,
I know it's been a long time since we've spoken, but I wanted to reach out to tell you how horribly sorry I was to learn of Mike's passing. You have my deepest sympathies. I would love to reconnect if you are so inclined and when you feel ready. If not, please know that you have my love always, and that you and Jordan are always in my thoughts.

I am sorry to learn about Michael's passing. I never met him. However, I heard bits of his life story through the years from his father, who was a high school and junior high classmate of mine. I met Mike's father, Jim, in the summer of 1943 at the Ranger Lodge Camp in Casco, Maine. I know Jim & Tina were lovingly proud of Mike. I hope my prayers and condolences will bring some small measure of softening the crushing sorrow that they feel at this time of thier lives.

Michael and I attended school together at UC. He was just beginning his career in comedy. We lost touch about 18 years ago. I am very sorry to hear of his passing and hope his memory will be a blessing for those that knew and loved him.

I had the pleasure of working with Mike a few times - he had a great spirit. He told me a story about sharing a green room with Joe Walsh, whom he didn't recognize. Finally Walsh had to tell Mike, "I'm a musician". Mike replied, "Would I know your work?" Walsh said, "Um, 'Hotel California'"
"Oh..."

Mike and I started doing comedy at the same time, in Cincinnati, in the early '80's. I was the youngest comic at the club, and Mike, just a few years older was both close friend and mentor. Mike was an immensely generous friend and collaborator. He introduced me to the work of Martin Mull and Albert Brooks, and reminded me, that even in an age of hipsters, it was important to study the classics. We worked on our acts together and did radio together. And I was fortunate in the Summer of '81, to have gotten to do a duo with him in clubs around Cincinnati for several months. One of our bits was

Esther-
My words can not express the deepest of sympathy for you and your family. Mike fought a very couragous battle. It was a pleasure and privaledge to care for your husband and to become your friend. I know that these days ahead will be very difficult for you. Being a young widow does stink!! My advice to you is "Count your blessings not your losses" I often thought when my husband fought the same battle would I have changed anything knowing that so much hurt lied ahead for me. Hold on to your precious memories and times of laughter. They say when you think of someone in heaven they are dancing. So Mike is probably up there telling jokes to my husband and laughing and happy to be free of so much pain. I wanted to come today to hug you in person but the virtual hug will have to do. You are in my heart and prayers my dear.

We've lost a coach, mentor and friend. Mike will be deeply missed, but also deeply remembered. Those of us that had the privelege of working with Mike and learning from him- whether in a class, a club, or a family - will carry him in our hearts and our funny bones always.
On a personal level, Mike helped me find the road to finding my voice on stage...I'll get there one day. He always set the bar a little higher and made me jump for it, always knowing he'd spot me if I needed it. Mike opened doors for many of us, and I'm grateful for the people I now know because he considered me his friend....what an honor it has been.
Just laugh more than you cry, and we'll all be ok.

Esther - we were very saddened to hear of Mike's passing. We saw him at the end of June, and he was telling us how proud he was that Carter had just graduated. He was always very supportive of Blaise when he was studying comedy. You and Jordan are in our prayers, and we're here if you need anything. We'll be in touch with you soon.

I just wanted to pass my condolences to the Irwin family. I met Mike six years ago through one of the comedy classes that he was teaching in Glenmont and I had a fun time with him. He had a great smile and a distinctive laugh. Very down to earth. Not an arrogant bone in his body. Very funny. He never talked down to you. He will be sorely missed.

We've taken two comedy courses and an Improv. course from Mike over the years and studied his CD's. As lasting and informative as those interactions were, the greatest gifts we received from Mike were his completely honest and helpful suggestions.
The "theory" of his courses was "I'm not going to focus on what you do poorly. Together we're going to find what you do WELL, and strive to develop THAT." This is a vast departure from the usual teacher-student interaction, and a very positive one at that.
The main memory we have of Mike can be summed up by an anonymous quote from some time ago: "After you're gone, people won't remember so much what you did or where you did it; but they'll never forget how you made them feel".
Mike made both of us feel like valued people. We plan to strive to work at being better comedians and performers in his honor and memory.

Mike was one of the kindest and most supportive people that has ever been part of my life. He allowed me to achieve a life-long goal of performing stand-up and was always there to answer questions and provide feedback to help me continually improve. I will always think fondly of the help that was given, the laughs that were had, and most of all, his friendship.

IN A GARDEN FOR ANGELS
Life is a gift not ours to keep,
A seed unsown and yet we still reap.
Here for only a very short while,
The heavenly reality of an earthly denial.
Like a flickering light here and then gone,
The essence of what love is based upon.
Birth and death the beginning and end,
As one heart breaks another one mends.
What was never ours is no more,
Returning to whom it belonged before?
Tear filled eyes silence the heart,
As body and spirit slowly part.
Life is a journey from first breath to last,
Memories left behind in the eternal past.
The here and now releases becoming a remember when,
Replanting the seed so that a new harvest can begin.
With trembling hands love says good-bye,
But still the heart can't help but ask, "Why God Why?"
A heavenly destination will be reached this day,
And in a garden for angels another spirit will awaken to play.
Although we have not seen Mike in several years we have such great memories of his laughter and joy. He will be dearly missed and our love and prayers go out to his family and friends.

God looked around His garden
And He found an empty place.
And then He looked down
upon the earth,
And saw your tired face.
He put His arms around you,
And lifted you to rest.
God's garden must be beautiful,
He always takes the best.
He knew that you were suffering,
He knew you were in pain,
He knew that you would never
Get well on earth again.
He saw the road was getting rough,
And the hills were hard to climb,
So He closed your weary eyelids,
And whispered "Peace be thine."
It broke our hearts to lose you.
But you didn't go alone,
For part of us went with you,
The day God called you home.

I met Mike two years ago when I took one of his comedy courses that he taught. I am a quiet individual and nobody really thought I could do stand up comedy. Mike gave me confidence and really helped me. He was very kind, fun, and inspiring individual. His death is a true loss to anyone who has ever met him. I consider myself very lucky to have spent time with him and I did learn alot from him and he helped me become a more confident and fun-loving individual. I will keep his family in my thoughts and prayers.

I had the privilege of working with Mike on many occasions in the clubs in NYC and around the country. He was a hilarious, gifted performer - imaginative and an outstanding comedy writer. And most important, he was a delight to be with on the road. I cannot believe he is gone so young! I'm sure he was welcomed into the Kingdom by some other comedy friends and he himself will be there to greet me at my time.

Mike can be remembered as someone who without judgement, cared for others who experience hard times, even the least fortunate in our society. Comedy Relief for the Homeless was one of the most memorable experiences of my life and the way Mike introduced me to his friends, family and Comedy Community was so kind and gracious. I am quite sad this day, but I do take comfort in the fact that somewhere, Mike and Tiny are enjoying a reunion of laughter- an appropriate reward for someone who made others happy amid trials and tough times. Peace to Esther and the Mike's Family... I am thinking of you today.
