Obituary of Grant W. Van Loan

Grant W. Van Loan, 85, of Happy Hollow Rd, Ft. Plain NY, passed away Sunday morning July 13th, 2008 at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam, NY. Born in the Village of Coxsackie, NY on June 8, 1923 a son of Grant W. and Mildred W. Hotaling Van Loan. He was a graduate of Coxsackie High School. Immediately following graduation Mr. Van Loan enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He became a Naval Aviator and served his country during World War II. After the war Grant became a Dairy Farmer in Ft. Plain New York and worked on the Van Loan Farm from 1947 to 1993. He was of the Lutheran Faith. He was a member of the National Rifle Association, the Experimental Aircraft Association, the New York Folklore Society, the National Wildlife Federation, the Bow Hunter's Society, National Arbor day Foundation, Green County Historical Society, Green County Council of the Arts, the American Legion Post #554 of Ft. Plain, NY and various wood carving associations. Mr. Van Loan enjoyed wood carving and loved to carve ducks, geese and woodcocks. He also enjoyed being outdoors and enjoyed bow hunting and wildlife photography. Everyone considered him to be a conservationist. He married Janet S. Swarts Van Loan on May 17, 1947. In addition to his wife survivor's include one son, Dana L. Van Loan Kathy of Ft. Plain, NY. One daughter, Lynn Boudreau Denis of San Diego, CA. One sister, Doris Swartz of Ft. Plain, NY. Grandchildren, Ian Van Loan of Ft. Plain, NY, Jesse Van Loan of Albany, NY, Stephanie Crowe of North Broadalbin, NY, Ryan Boudreau of San Diego, CA and Christopher Boudreau of Tampa, Florida. Four great-grandchildren, Allehah and Aiden Van Loan of Fort Plain, Benjamin and Ella Boudreau both of San Diego, CA. Two nephews, Lee Ritter of Herkimer, NY and Bradley Swartz of Ballston Lake, NY. A grave side memorial service will be held on Thursday July 17th, 2008 at 1:00P.M. at Ft. Plain Cemetery, Ft. Plain, NY with full military honors. There are no calling hours.
