Obituary of Helen M. Evans

Mrs. Helen M. Evans went to join her Lord on Thursday July 17, 2008. She passed away peacefully at the Mountain Valley Hospice in Gloversville. Helen spent 91 years on this earth and left a legacy of family and friends. Born in Amsterdam, NY on February 17, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Stephen and Sophia Czerwiniski Lewandowski. She was employed for many years by Mohasco Carpet Mills and later by the New York State Dept. of Taxation, from which she retired in 1973. She was a very active member of Sacred Heart Church in Gloversville for many years. Helen was enthusiastic over life and thoroughly enjoyed bowling, gardening, and bingo. In her later years she loved her trips to the casino. Helen married Ben Andrzejewski on November 23, 1938. Helen and Ben had six children together: Bernard Andrzejewski and his wife Helen of Gloversville, Dorothy Ferraro and her husband Gary of Gloversville, Frances Carter of Hagaman, Helen Leggiero and her husband Peter of Las Vegas, NV, Edward Anderson and his wife Peggy of Amsterdam and Patricia DeMaria and her husband Guido of Amsterdam. She is also survived by 21 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. She married Bill Evans on November 3, 1973, to whom she was very much attached. They enjoyed seventeen years together until he passed away on December 23, 1990. She was predeceased by three brothers: Paul, Steve and Edward Lewandowski. The family will receive relatives and friends from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, July 20th at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St; Gloversville, where a prayer service will be conducted at 9:15 a.m. Monday, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, Gloversville. The Very Rev. Donald Czelusniak will be the celebrant. Interment will take place at Saint Stanislaus Cemetery, Amsterdam. Memorial contributions may be made to the James A. Brennan Memorial Humane Society, 437 Nine Mile Tree Road, Gloversville, or to Mountain Valley Hospice, 108 Steele Avenue, Gloversville, NY 12078.
