Obituary of Laurine N. Givis

Laurine N. Givis, 82, of Schmidt St., Tribes Hill, NY passed away Sunday July 20, 2008 at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam. Born in Amsterdam, NY on May 12, 1926 a daughter of Leland and Eilleen Livingston Niles. She was a resident of the area for most of her life and was a 1945 Graduate of the former Wilbur H. Lynch High School in Amsterdam. She went on to attend Brown University. Mrs. Givis worked for a time as a Bookkeeper in New York City and ran a Hallmark Card Store on Crane St. in Schenectady. She also worked at the former Chicago Markets in Amsterdam and last for Daniel C. Duross, LTD in Johnstown, NY, before retiring in 1987. Laurine was a communicant and was an active volunteer at Sacred Heart Church in Tribes Hill. She was a member of the church's Altar Rosary Society and Seniors Group. Mrs. Givis enjoyed traveling and being with her family. She married Edward A. Givis on August 31, 1951. He passed away on December 30, 1971. Survivor's include; Two sons, Edward Givis Sr. Linda of Johnstown, NY and Mark Givis Debbie of Johnstown, NY. One brother, Charles Niles Maxine of Florida. Three grandchildren, Edward "E.J."Givis Jr. of New York City. Samantha Givis and Leanne Sutliff both of Johnstown, NY. Nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Laurine was predeceased by one brother, Leland Buddy Niles Jr. and two sisters, Eileen Dibble and Marie Baker. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday July 24, 2008 at 10:00A.M. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave, Amsterdam, NY followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00A.M. at Sacred Heart Church, Tribes Hill, NY with Father Patrick Gallagher OFM Conv. as celebrant. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Ft. Johnson, NY. Calling hours are Wednesday, July 23, 2008, from 4 to 7 pm at the funeral home.
