Obituary of William Roger Cooney
William Roger Cooney, 89, of Gloversville, passed away on Friday, February 10, 2017 at his home.
Born on April 21, 1927 in Retsof, New York, he was a son of the late James and Marjorie Hudson Cooney. Bill attended schools in Retsof, received a B.S from Fredonia (NY) Teachers College and a Masters in Music from Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester. He started his teaching career in music in Clifton Springs and then Geneseo. In 1955, Bill moved to the Gloversville area, where he took a job with the Gloversville School District as Director of the Music Education. He concluded his career as Director of Music for Saratoga public schools.
Bill was a proud Veteran of the United States Navy, enlisting at the age of 17, serving his country in the Philippines during World War II. He continued his service in the Naval Reserve while a student at Fredonia.
In 1951 Bill married Barbara Theurer, who passed away in 1973. Bill is also predeceased by his late wife, Donna Moffat Mathews, who passed away in 2000.
An active member of the former St. Mary's Church and Sacred Heart Church, Bill was a trustee for the board and would often act as an acolyte during church services; Bill was devoted to his Catholic Faith. He was a director for the Gloversville Salvation Army Board, a member of the Gloversville Rotary and would previously act as a proctor for pre-military enlistment. Bill was an avid fisherman and antique clock dealer. He enjoyed history and geneology, listening to classical music, and he was a Bills and Orangemen fan. Bill will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
Survivors include his loving family, sons, Roger Cooney and John Mathews; daughters, Marjorie Macy (Frank) and Celinda Holik (John) and Karen Quakenbush; grandchildren, Jason, Jenny, Jordan, Sarah, Will, Beth, Kyle, Dana, Hannah, Hudson and Hallie; great-grandchildren, Kaylee, Kristen, Jaden, and Miles. Bill was predeceased by his three brothers, John "Jack" Cooney, James Cooney and Donald Cooney.
In keeping with the family's wishes, there will be no formal viewing or calling hours at this time. A celebration of Bill's life will take place in the spring.
Memorial donations in Bill's name can be made to the Salvation Army, 10 Spring Street, Gloversville, NY, 12078, Gloversville Rotary Club, 522 N. Perry Street, Johnstown, NY, 12095 or to a charity of one's choice.
