Obituary of Virginia F. Slezak
Virginia F. Slezak, formerly of State Hwy 30 N, Amsterdam, NY, passed away Wednesday evening September 17, 2008 at Mt. Loretto Nursing Home where she has resided for over 4 years.
Born in Hagaman, NY on January 14, 1924 a daughter of John and Marcella Popiel Bilinski. She was a lifelong area resident and was a graduate of the former Wilbur H. Lynch High School in Amsterdam. She worked for a time at the General Electric Co. in Schenectady in the radio transmitter department during the early part of World War II. During the War Virginia served in the U.S. Navy with the U.S. Navy WAVES Women Accepted For Volunteer Emergency Service. After the war she was employed for 20 years as a clerk for the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance retiring from there in 1989. She was a communicant and faithful member of St. Stephen's Roman Catholic Church, Hagaman, NY. Virginia was known for being a very sweet and kind person.
She is survived by one son, William N. "Bill" Slezak of Hagaman, NY. One brother, Steve Bilins of Ft. Johnson. One sister, Stephanie Boguzes of Amsterdam. One brother in law, Chester Slezak Abbie and two sisters in law, Winifred Petroski Zygmund and Polly Slezak all of Amsterdam. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Virginia was predeceased by her daughter Sandra G. Slezak in 1970. She was also predeceased by two brothers, Joseph and Eugene Bilinski and three sisters, Bernice Jackson, Mildred Baker and Winifred Frieman.
Funeral services will be held on Monday September 22, 2008 at 9:00A.M. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave, Amsterdam, NY followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00A.M. at St. Stephen's Roman Catholic Church, Pawling St., Hagaman, NY with Fr. Martin DeRose as celebrant. . Interment will be in St. Stephen's Cemetery, Hagaman, NY. The family will receive relatives and friend s on Sunday September 21, 2008 from 3:00 to 5:00 PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Stephen's Roman Catholic Church, Pawling St., Hagaman, NY 12086 or to Community Hospice of Amsterdam, Manny Crs. Rd., Amsterdam, NY 12010.
