Obituary of Douglas K. Nugent

Douglas K. "Pop" Nugent, 65, of State Hwy 5S, Amsterdam, passed away Monday October 27th, 2008 at his home with his loving family at his side. Born in Laconia, N.H. on August 18, 1943 a son of Desmond and Mary Clark Nugent. He was raised in New Hampshire and attended the North Stratford N.H. High School. Mr. Nugent was a Vietnam Veteran serving in the U.S. Navy. He served aboard the U.S.S. Mars AFS-1 when it was first commissioned and later transferred to the U.S.S. Ashtabula AD-51. He received the Vietnam Service Medal with Three Bronze Stars and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. Mr. Nugent was employed for a time as a Machinist with Douglas Aircraft in Long Beach, CA, the Pratt and Whitney Co. in East Hartford, CT and last with the General Electric Co. in Schenectady for over 35 years retiring in 2003. Douglas was a member of the Woestina Reformed Church in Rotterdam Junction, NY. He was also a member of the John J. Wyszomirski American Legion Post #701 in Amsterdam, NY. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing and also was an avid NASCAR fan. He married Kathleen Nicklaw on May 29, 1964. In addition to his loving wife survivors include four daughters, Kandace R.N. Pickney Stephen of Pattersonville, NY, Kimberly S. Neff Scott of Pattersonville, NY, Dawn K. Santuccione Joseph of Amsterdam, NY and Doreen K. Shafer Nugent of Amsterdam, NY. One sister, Marilyn Allen of Tolland, CT. Five grandchildren, Sarah Brittany Neff, Ryan Douglas Neff, Michael Joseph Santuccione, Deidra Erin Shafer and Jenna Lee Shafer. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Mr. Nugent also leaves behind his loving dog Booga Bear. Funeral services will be held on Saturday November 1, 2008 at 2:00PM at the Woestina Reformed Church, Main St., Rotterdam Junction, NY with Pastor Kent McHeard presiding. Interment of cremated remains will follow with full military honors in Woestina Cemetery, Main St., Rotterdam Junction, NY. The family will recieve relatives and friends on Saturday from 1:00 to 2:00 PM at the Woestina Reformed Church prior to the service. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave, Amsterdam, NY 12010. In Lieu of Flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Community Hospice of Amsterdam, Manny Corners Rd. Amsterdam, NY 12010 or to New York Oncology Hematology, 1700 Amsterdam Riverfront Center, Amsterdam, NY 12010.
