Obituary of Alex Aesch
Alex Aesch, Jr; age 94, of Johnstown, died Wednesday morning, February 15, 2017 at Capstone Center for Rehab & Nursing, Amsterdam.
He was born September 26, 1922 in Gloversville, the son of Alex and Marie Moser Aesch. He served in the US Army during World War II in the British Isles, Holland, France, Belgium and Germany. He was one of few who received the Metz Award for the liberation of Metz, France. He was also a recipient of the Bronze Star.
Alex worked on the family farm and later was employed by Mohasco of Amsterdam and the Gloversville Dept. of Public Works from 1961 to 1985.
He was a member of the North Main St. United Methodist and a lifetime member of the Broadalbin VFW.
Alex enjoyed gardening, lawn care, fishing and was an avid deer hunter.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Frances R. Snedeker Aesch, whom he married on July 1, 1972; five children, Shirley J. Alkinburgh (Larry) of Johnstown, Robert F. Aesch of Gloversville, Elinor J. Aesch-Mills of Round Rock, TX, James E. Aesch (Megon Phillips Aesch) of Cambridge and John T. Aesch (Gloria) of Gloversville; three siblings, Rosa Vergun of Gloversville, Richard Aesch (Sandra) of Gloversville and Ruth Frasier of Perth; three step-sons, Leo C. Rathbun (Pamela) of Newport News, VA, Kevin A. Rathbun (Kathy) of Hatfield, Arkansas and Mark R. Rathbun (Tina Pabis) of Ephratah. He also leaves behind 13 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Alex was predeceased by his first wife, Florence C. Firth Aesch; a sister, Mary Lock; two step-daughters, Elaine Rathbun and Deborah Skretkowicz, as well as his parents.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 5 to 8PM Saturday, February 18 at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St, Gloversville where a Funeral Service will take place 1PM Sunday with the Rev. Judith Johnson Siebold officiating.
Interment will take place at Ferndale Cemetery, Johnstown.
