Obituary of Sylvia Salerno
Amsterdam, NY—Sylvia Salerno, 95, of Chapel Place, passed away on Tuesday, February 21, 2017, at St. Mary's Hospital with her loving family at her side.
Born January 30, 1922, in Gloversville, New York, she was the daughter of the late Herman E. and Hattie Seld Rosenberg. Sylvia is a graduate of Gloversville High School Class of 1940. On July 11, 1946 she married the love of her life Alexander Salerno. It was a strong and beautiful marriage that lasted until his passing on December 19, 2001.
Sylvia enjoyed fashion and was employed in retail sales for several local clothing shops including the Joan Lee Shop: Gaby's, and the New Paris Shop before moving on to Montgomery Ward and J.C. Penny. During her last 10 years prior to her retirement in 1994, she spent time as a clerk for the Amsterdam Free Library.
Sylvia was of the Jewish Faith. She was a member of the Friends of the Library where she also volunteered. She also served on the Montgomery SPCA Board of Directors.
Syliva was predeceased by her beloved husband Alexander; her sister, Marion Ortiz; and her brother, Donald Rosenberg. Survivors included several, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 24, 2017 at 1:30 PM at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, NY. The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday from 12:30 to 1:30 PM at the funeral home. Burial will follow at the Fairview Cemetery in Amsterdam. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Sylvia's memory to the Amsterdam Free Library, 28 Church Street, Amsterdam, NY 12010 or the Montgomery County SPCA, PO Box 484, Amsterdam, NY 12010.
