Obituary of Charles S. Gray

Charles S. Gray 71, of Rt. 334, Fonda, passed away Monday at St.Mary's Hospital. Born in the Town Of Florida on December 2, 1936, he was the son of the late Francis and Wilhelmina Kruger Gray and step son of the late Veronica Cavaliere Gray. A 1955 graduate of Fonda Fultonville Central School, he was a lifelong resident. He retired from the Village Of Fonda after a thirty year career in 1995 serving as street and water commissioner. He later worked for the Town Of Glen, Brown's Ford and the Fonda Fair. Affectionately known as the "Rabbit Man", Charley was a well known rabbit breeder in the area. He was very active with the Town Of Mohawk Fire Department where he served as past assistant chief and currently safety officer. He was awarded Fireman Of The Year and was 1st runner up in 1986 and 2nd runner up in 1989. He belonged to the Fire Advisory Board and the Fireman's County Association and a commissioner for T.O.M. He was also a board member for the Evergreen Cemetery Association. He also loved gardening and was an Army veteran. On May 15, 1960, he was united in marriage to the former Joyce Davis. In addition to his beloved wife, he leaves his sons; Michael Susan Gray of Amsterdam and Daniel Gray of Fonda; a brother; Curtis Peggy Gray of Kenmore, Wash.; grandchildren; Shawn, Sandra, Steven and Katie Gray; and nieces, nephews and cousins. His brother William Gray and sister, Patricia Wilder both predeceased him. Services will take place on Friday at 11:00 am at the Jackson & Betz Funeral Home, 15 Main Street Fultonville. Fr. Kenneth Swain officiating. Interment will follow with fire department honors in Evergreen Cemetery. Calling hours are Thursday from 4-7 pm at the funeral home where the fire department will gather at 6:30 to pay tribute to Charles. Contributions may be made to the Town Of Mohawk Fire Department or the American Cancer Society both in care of the funeral home office.
