Obituary of Sadie Piliponis

Sadie "Sally" Piliponis, 98, formerly of 412 East Main St., Amsterdam, passed away Monday at her home at the Lafayette Redeemer Residence in Philadelphia. Sally was born May 14, 1910 in Amsterdam, the second child of five children of Zygmont and Salomeja Saldis Karutis. She attended St. Casimir's School and St. Mary's Institute and was a lifelong area resident prior to moving to Philadelphia three years ago. She was a clerical worker at Bigelow Sanford Carpet Co. and the Scotia Navy Depot during World War II. Sally was also a lifelong partner with her husband Joe in the former Piliponis Market at 271 E. Main St. and worked in Albany for 19 years at the Dept. of Tax and Finance in the Corporate Tax Division of the State of New York. Sally was a communicant of St. Casimir's Roman Catholic Church and was a lifetime member of The Living Rosary Society as well as the St. Casimir's Ladies Auxiliary, St. Casimir's School Auxiliary, St. Casimir's Choir, and the former American Lithuanian Ladies Auxiliary. She married Joseph M. Piliponis on November 21, 1948 at St. Casimir's Church. Joe passed on in 1991. She is survived by her daughter Christine Piliponis Lenehan and her husband James of Philadelphia, her 3 grandchildren, Brian J. Lenehan of New York City, Kerry Lenehan Johnston of Merion Station, Pa, and Kevin J. Lenehan of Honolulu, Hawaii. She is also survived by 3 great grandchildren, Natalie, Bradley, and Caroline Johnston of Merion Station, Pa. as well as numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews. Services are Friday at 11:00 am at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home at 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:30 a.m. at St. Casimir's Church. Fr. David Mickiewicz, celebrant. Burial will be at St. Casimir's Cemetery. A calling hour will precede the service Friday from 10 to 11 am at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Memorial Fund of St. Casimir's Church in care of the funeral home , Amsterdam, NY 12010.
