Obituary of Charles M. Sager

Jesus called Charles M. Sager, 75, of Olympia Washington and formerly of Amsterdam, New York, to his heavenly reward on Monday, February 2, 2009. Charles was born in Amsterdam, New York, on May 15, 1933, a son of James and Josephine Sager. He was a graduate of Amsterdam High School. In 1954, Charley married Helen M. Laymon of Cherry Valley, New York. Charles served in the United States Army from 1954 to 1956 assigned to HQ Company 14th Infantry in Hawaii. Charles was a Mason Superintendent and worked in New York, Florida and Washington State. His most memorable job building sites were working at NASA, building the summer home baseball field of the Pittsburg Pirates baseball team, University of Washington, the Tumwater Library and the Puyallup Tribal School. Charles enjoyed fishing in the Great Sacandaga Lake with his friends and family. In his later years he really loved playing Santa in the local malls, with a real beard that the children always wanted to tug on. Charles and Helen Sager lived a happy life in New York, Florida, and Washington State. Helen Sager passed away on November 11, 2001. Charley then fell in love with Helen Spain. They enjoyed traveling the state and visited almost every casino in western Washington and Oregon. They were members of the Old Town Center Choir. They enjoyed playing cards and watching old movies on cable. They loved visiting with family and grandchildren. Helen Spain was truly a blessing for all. Charles is survived by his one beloved son, John Paul Sager and his wife, Michelle of Olympia, ; one beloved daughter, Lori Jason of Bradenton, Florida; four cherished grandchildren, Austin and Garrett Sager and Robert and Danny Jason; five great grandchildren Michael, Kayla, Jarrett, Natale, Hunter, and Jenna-Marie Jason. His dear brother, Richard Sager and his wife Carol of Schenectady New York, and a sister-in-law Patricia Sager of Gloversville, New York. Charles was also blessed with four step children, Pat McLaughlin, Virginia Ginny and Jim Vinson, Elizabeth Liz and Warren Spud Murphy, and Robert Bob and Mary Spain. They provided Helen and Charley with fourteen grandchildren and twenty-seven great grandchildren to enjoy life with. Charles was predeceased in life by his beloved son Michael G. Sager who passed away on August 16, 1967. A Mass Of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church, 1021 Boundary St. SE, in Olympia on Friday, February 6, 2009, at 3:00 p.m., with full military honors bestowed. Interment will take place in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Fort Johnson, New York under the care of the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, NY 12010.
