Obituary of Attilio Albanese
Attilio "Till" Albanese, 89, of Johnstown passed away Saturday February 7, 2009 at Nathan Littauer Hospital in Gloversville.
Attilio was born on August 23, 1919 in Spinete, Italy to the late Pasquale Albanese and Giovanni Genny Doganieri Albanese.
Attilio served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945.
On October 27, 1946 Attilio married Clara Barthé Albanese and they shared 62 wonderful years together.
Till loved the game of golf. He first began working at the Pine Brook Golf Course in Gloversville as a caddy. In 1954, Attilio went to Springfield, VT to help construct Crown Point Country Club. He worked at the Crown Point Country Club for over 30 years. But it was always Till's dream to construct his own golf course. Till made his dream a reality when he designed and constructed the former Alban Hills Golf Course, which is now referred to as Fox Run. Attilio was a member of various organizations locally and nationally. He was a member of the Moose Lodge, a life time member of the Elks Lodge, life time member of the VFW, and a member of the Catholic War Veterans. Till was also a member of the PGA Professional Golfers Association, NEGCSA North East Golf Course Superintendents Association, and the NGCSAA National Golf Course Superintendents Association of America.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Clara Barthé Albanese of Johnstown, three sons: Paul Albanese of Concord, NC, Carl Albanese Donna of Johnstown and John Albanese Barbara of Mayfield; two brothers: Mario Albanese of Gloversville, and Carl Albanese of Florida and two sisters: Norma Burell of Florida and Inez Rooney of Gloversville.
Additional survivors include eight grandchildren: P.J., Casey, Collin, Mandie, Amber, Austin, Shauna, and Nina, as well as three great grandchildren: Issiah, Daevon and Esibella. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
In addition to his parents, Attilio was preceded in death by six siblings: Anthony Albanese, William Albanese, Rudolph Albanese, Lillian Doremus, James Albanese, and Louis "Toddy" Albanese.
Friends and relatives are invited and may call on Friday, February 13, 2009 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont Street; Gloversville. On Saturday, February 14, 2009 a Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m. at St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church in Gloversville. The Rev. Kenneth Swain will be the celebrant. Interment will take place in the spring at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Johnstown.
In memory of Till, a memorial monument will be erected at the former Alban Hills Golf Course. Contributions for the monument can be made to the family in care of Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St; Gloversville, NY 12078.
