My condolences to "Herb's" family. As a flat-landeras he called me, it was always a pleasure to see Herbie at the golf course each summer when I vacationed in Northville. It won't be the same without him there. I enjoyed our talks about our local fire departments, politics and will greatly miss his jokes and sense of humor. I'm sure he is shooting "par". May God comfort you in your time of sorrow.

Dear McLain family:
I always enjoyed working with Herb at Sacandaga. He was always most interested in what was best for the golf course and the members. If you were a friend you were a friend through thick and thin. He was a shrewd judge of human nature and in recent years Jack was the light of his life. I will miss his friendly advice and the many conversations we had

I also worked with Herb directly through my job & talked to him quite often. It was always a pleasure to receive an e-mail from him. Quite the "jokester". Pat and Family, I was deeply saddened to learn that Herb had passed away. Herb loved his family and was especially proud of his grandson. When I used to stop by his office, he often had a new picture or a story to tell about his grandson.
Herb was a leader and brought this community into the future. His office door was open to all. He was devoted to the Mayfield Volunteer Fire Dept and wore his Fire Police Uniform with dignity and pride.
Herb will be greatly missed by this community.
I am including a short poem given to me when my father passed away; I hope that it gives you and your family the comfort it gave me.
Bill, Marj and Abby Jones
"When I Must Leave You"
When I must leave you for a while,
Please do not grieve and shed wild tears
And hug your sorrow to you throughout the years,
But start out bravely with a gallant smile;
And for my sake and in my name
Live on and do all things the same,
Feed not your loneliness on empty days,
But fill each waking hour in useful ways,
Reach out your hand in comfort and in cheer
And I in turn will comfort you and hold you near;
And never, never be afraid to die,
For I am waiting for you in the sky!
