My heartfelt condolences to the Major family and my sincerest apologies for the tardiness of this note. Geoff and I became friends at McGill in 1984 and stayed in touch until about ten years ago. Needless to say I was shocked to find this news when I went looking on the web to find his current contact info. From the day I met him I knew he was a great guy. Funny, smart, caring. We bonded over late night peanut butter sandwiches while watching David Letterman in the dorm, basketball and talking politics. In subsequent years it was great catching up with him by phone and hosting him when he came to DC for a race. To his loving family and friends, including those who wrote the moving tributes below, I am so sorry for your loss. He lives on as a strong presence in our memories.

Mark;
Our sincere condolences to you and your entire family.
I remember meeting and talking to Geoff and your dad at length during your birthday party last year and how proud you both were of him as a brother and a son. It is always such a great tragedy when a child or sibling dies before their time. I am sure God set a special plate for him at his table.
We won't be up until the end of April, but I hope we can ALL find time to go to the Stadium, raise a pint, and listen to some good blarney of your memories & life with Geoff.

Richard and I always looked forward to our time with Geoff. From the first time we met, we knew how very special he was. Always a gentleman, always kind, meticulous in his thinking, always concerned about others...that is how we remember him.
We now realize where he got all of those wonderful traits...from his family. You are ALL so very special. We can see bits of Geoff in each of you. Even in death he has given us a special gift - the cherished friendship of his family and friends. Although we have just begun to know each of you - we feel a closeness and love that we will always treasure.
No words can express the sadness we feel. We will miss him, a true gentleman and friend.
Please know that we are always here...do not hesitate to call. Remember...Hugs are always welcome to give or receive...

I just received a call informing me of Geoff's passing and immediately wanted to express love and sympathy to you all. Many years have passed since Mark and I enjoyed great friendship during college and the beginning of our young families and careers.....Geoff was always an arms length away with a smile on his face and a positive attitude even though he was "too young" to participate with many of our adventures.....what a great guy and a tribute to a wonderful family....thank you for welcoming me into your family life during those few but wonderful years....with deepest sympathy and love....Dave Frederick & Family

To the Major Family:
I had the honor and privilege of knowing Geoff for almost 18 years. I almost missed out on Geoff's life completely as he and I did not meet in law school until a couple of weeks before we graduated. I thank my friends Dave Noll and Tom Mortati for making that introduction. From the time I met Geoff, I felt like we had been friends forever.
Through the years, Geoff and I had the opportunity to do so much together from all the running on Saturdays in Amsterdam, the road races, golf outings, the trips up to Mark's camp, planning the details of our fictitious French running club Club Quebecois, etc. I wish we could have done more.
I valued Geoff's friendship tremendously and admired his many qualities; his selflessness, honesty, integrity, loyalty, compassion, positive attitude, dedication and work ethic. The list goes on and on. He truly was Hagaman's finest son! I will miss him immensely.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Major and family,
I am the Clinton County Surrogate and County Court Judge. My wife Mary and I got to know Geoff over the years when he visited Kevin and Michelle Peryer. Kevin served on the Professional Responsibility Committee with Geoff. We had many good times at the Peryers' house. Geoff was a wonderful human being. At times like this, I am at a loss for words. I can only say that you should be so very proud of him, not just as an attorney but as a son. You have been, and will continue to be, in my thoughts and prayers.

I went to law school with Geoff. Its never easy to hear that a good friend has passed but its even more difficult in this case because of how young Geoff was. Knowing Geoff and the way he lived his life, he had a great many interesting and unique experiences ahead of him. I always admired Geoff for many reasons but particularly for the way he remained active in the community and for his sense of humour. We had quite a few laughs during law school as well as after we graduated.
Geoff was a great human being and he will be sorely missed.

Every run from now on and I promise brother to start again there will come some step I will think of you.

I took some time to reflect on what Geoff and his family have meant to me. My wife, Carrie, and I are profoundly sad. I cannot express in words how much Geoff meant to me and my family. He was part of everything in our lives. I cannot imagine life without Geoff. There will not be a day that goes by that I do not think of Geoff. Everything I do from now on will be diminished in some way because Geoff will not be a part of it. It has been my honor to be Geoff's friend for over 20 years and we are blessed to have had his love and friendship for this long. The times ahead will be especially hard for me, Carrie and Casey but we will endeavor to keep Geoff in our hearts and minds at all times.

Geoff - you were loved and cherished by so many including me and my family - from my parents through my children and particularly "Matty" Mortati, your god son. I have taken great solace in reading the many postings, particularly Dave's below and as well Murph's. It will take an awful long time for me to get my arms around this, if ever.
To all who knew Geoff and especially his family I would like to print here some of the words I spoke in his honor at the wonderful luncheon today after his funeral:
I was a friend of Geoff's from law school and like all of us who knew and loved him, his passing has left a tremendous void in our lives. Geoff was about as fine a human being as one could ask for. His loss is felt by so many as he was a son, brother, uncle, nephew, godfather and friend and touched so many lives.
Many years ago Geoff told me that if he ever got married he would like me to be his best man and give the toast at his wedding. As I sat in church today at his funeral all I could think of was how this was so very wrong as I should've been in that church celebrating a wedding for Geoff someday and not a funeral. Long ago I'd thought of some of the words I could say in honor of Geoff. For anyone who knew Geoff, you knew how much of a basketball fan he was having played in high school. And the words that came to me were actually from a basketball coach who was dying of cancer. That man was Jim Valvano who I met when I was a kid when he ran sports camps at Iona College in New Rochelle, NY. When you think about it, who can tell us more about how to live than those who are dying.
And he said that we should do three things every day: we should think, we should laugh and we should cry and that if you do these three things you've lived a full day. Well, we should all think back about Geoff every day - of the wonderful person he was and of the fine example he set and how he touched all our lives. And though there will no doubt be many tears of sadness, there will also be many tears of joy as we celebrate his life and his legacy. As Geoff taught me to toast in Polish so many years ago: Na Zdrowie!!!
I love you and miss you Geoff.

He taught me many Polish words that to this day, I wonder what some of them really meant! Your son was a wonderful person and was taken way too soon. He made me run the Mule Haul in the freezing snow storm...he guilted me because he said we needed someone to represent our office because he was in charge of the race. As one of Geoffâ??s close friends since childhood I just want to let his family know how much Geoff meant to the â??boysâ?? Chris Fedullo â??monsterâ??, Mark Hamm â??markieâ??, Paul Catena â??hookâ??, Dave Luci â??loochâ?? & I â??murphâ??. Weâ??ve been an unofficial band of brothers since childhood, and unlike most groups of friends that tend to drift after high school, we are still extremely close- we still golf together, attend each otherâ??s family events, and get together often just to hang or have a few â??brewskisâ?? as Geoff called them. â??Smachnyâ? polish for tasty, heâ??d say, as he cracked the lid on his beer, â??the nectar of the deitiesâ?. Instead of gathering in my parents garage the Red Pub as we did back then, we would now meet on Geoffâ??s deck or at Monsterâ??s house to see all our kids hang together & play pick-up hoops like we did as youth. Geoff had no kids of his own, but he was like the old polish Uncle to our kids. When my son heard of Geoffâ??s passing, he recalled how Geoff taught him a raunchy, sillier version of the Pennsylvania Polka.
Geoff was one of the funniest, most irrepressible characters Iâ??ve ever met. I knew from the minute I met him that we would be lifelong friends. He had the quickest, most sarcastic wit of anyone I knew, and God help the clueless, unsuspecting fool who trifled with him- he would cut them to pieces while tears of laughter would roll down our faces. Growing from a pudgy little kid into a chiseled elite runner, Geoff directed his most classic barbs at the â??fattiesâ?? of the world. God help Monster after he picked up 15 pounds in his gut after graduating College- â??thatâ??s jelly, â??cause jam donâ??t shake like thatâ??. Monster would hit Geoff back with some jokes about his height and back & forth weâ??d go until, again, weâ??d be crying laughing.
Growing up weâ??d do everything together and weâ??d argue about anything and everything- politics, sports, whose turn it was to drive, politics again, etc, etc. Unconsciously, we were forming the bonds of friendship that we came to actually rely on in our adulthood. I think thatâ??s why most of us found our way back here- to the strength, comfort, and familiarity of something that we knew made us better people every day. It is why Father 'Hook' will now perform final services for Geoff, and the â??boysâ?? will bring our families to honor Geoff and tell him one last time how we plan to keep his memory alive. We will see his face every time we go for a run and set out a tee for him when we golf. We will set a chair out for Geoff when we get together and place an open brewski out for him, and we will cry laughing as we recall the endless memories and sayings of our boy â??Majâ??.
