Obituary of Irma M. Armstrong

Amsterdam Irma M. Armstrong, 82, of Van Dyke Avenue, passed away peacefully Friday, March 6, 2009 at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam. She was born in Tribes Hill, February 9, 1927 a daughter of the late Herman and Mae Scott Van Wie. Irma was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of Wilbur Lynch High School in Amsterdam. During her high school years, she met William "Bill" Armstrong, and the couple eventually married on July 9, 1955. Irma worked in the office at Mohasco Industries in Amsterdam until the birth of her first daughter when she decided to be at home to raise her family. In the 1970's, Irma and Bill were very involved with G.A.V.A.C. where she volunteered as a dispatcher for some time. Irma also worked at various places in the area before working at the former Montgomery County Infirmary, retiring in 1992. Irma was very talented and enjoyed crafting, knitting, cross stitch and quilting. She also enjoyed spending time with her family and friends who will miss her dearly. Her loving family includes her husband of nearly 54 years, William "Bill" Armstrong of Amsterdam and her two daughters, Lynn M. Armstrong and Diane M. Armstrong both of Amsterdam. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. In addition to her parents, Irma was predeceased by her brother, Harold Van Wie. Funeral Services will be at 11:00AM on Tuesday, March 10, 2009 at Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam with Rev. Roland "Mac" McDonald, officiating. Interment will be at a later date in Pine Grove Cemetery, Tribes Hill. The family will receive relatives and friends on Monday evening from 5:00 to 8:00PM at the funeral home.
