Obituary of Frank E. Sweeney
Mr. Frank E. Sweeney Jr; age 84 of Johnstown, died Tuesday morning, March 24, 2009 at Albany Medical Center.
He was born March 20, 1925 in Gloversville, the son of the late Frank and Carrie Peris Sweeney. He was a 1942 graduate of Gloversville High School and also graduated from Pratt Institute in New York City. He served in the US Army during World War II as a paratrooper. He received the American Service Medal, Croix De Guerre, European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal with Bronze Arrowhead, Good Conduct Medal, Purple Heart and the World War II Victory Medal.
Frank was a 50-year Honored Member of the Operating Engineer´s Joint Local #106 of Albany where he was employed as a crane operator for many years. Frank loved to go hunting. He was a member of Holy Trinity Parish of Johnstown.
He was married to Elizabeth A. Erkenbrack on September 3, 1947. Elizabeth died on October 19, 1981. On April 29, 1989 Frank married Margaret Borden Stock who survives. He is also survived by eleven children: Frank E. Sweeney, III and Michael H. Sweeney Patricia of Meco, Virginia L. McCumber John of Mayfield, Kathy A. Otto John of Brandon, FL; Charlene A. St. Dennis Richard, James R. Sweeney Jill and John T. Sweeney of Gloversville, Joan M. Sweeney of Meco, Thomas J. Sweeney Missy of Johnstown, Ann E. Blanchard of Gloversville and Nancy J. Johnson Robert of Fonda; a brother, Robert Sweeney Jane of Virginia; 24 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, seven stepchildren: Lawrence Stock, Linda Knapp Peter, James Stock, Donna Mussella, Dr. Ronald Stock, Margaret Wojciechowski Bud and David Stock Susan; several step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Frank was preceded in death by a daughter, Maureen Sweeney and by a brother, Owen Sweeney.
Private visitation will take place at he convenience of the family. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 28th at St. Patrick's Church, Johnstown. The Rev. Kenneth Swain will be the celebrant. Interment with military honors will follow at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville. Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the American Heart Association, 440 New Karner Rd; Albany, NY 12205 or to the charity of your choice.
