Obituary of Thomas J. Rice

Mr. Thomas J. Rice, Sr; age 82, of Gloversville, died Tuesday afternoon in Johnstown at the home of his daughter with his loving family at his side. He was born February 26, 1927 in Herkimer, NY, the son of the late Myles and Mary Starr Rice. He came to Gloversville as a child and later served in the Army during World War II in Germany. As an employee of General Electric Company in Schenectady he worked in their foundry and maintenance departments for many years until his retirement in 1988. Mr. Rice was a member of Bleecker Street Church of Christ, Gloversville. Survivors include his daughter, Margaret "Peggy" Surnear Dave of Johnstown; two sisters, Mary Myers of Fonda and Joan Burgess of Gloversville; three grandchildren, Buffy Rousseau Peter, David R. Surnear, Jr. Lisa and Lucas M. Surnear; six great-grandchildren, Libby, Nicholas, Steven, Shea, Caleb and Skyler; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his son, Thomas J. Rice, Jr; his brother, John Rice and his sisters, Shirley Clifford and Betty Ackerknecht. The family will receive relatives and friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St; Gloversville, where a funeral service will take place 10:00 a.m. Friday with the Rev. Sandra Geer officiating. Interment with military honors will take place at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville.
