Obituary of Geraldine A. Johnson

Amsterdam/Montgomery County Geraldine A. "Mammy" Johnson, 89, of Steadwell Avenue, passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at St. Mary's Hospital with her loving family by her side. She was born in Leominster, MA March 10, 1920 the daughter of the late Merton B. and Eva M. Gilmore Mason. Mrs. Johnson was raised in Massachusetts and was a graduate of High School in Springfield. Following high school, she furthered her education at Springfield Business School before marrying Niels Johnson of Thompsonville, CT on June 5, 1945. The couple moved to Amsterdam in 1946 where Mrs. Johnson worked as a secretary at Bigelow-Sanford. She then went to work for the Montgomery County Trust Co. for several years before retiring in 1987 to help care for her husband who predeceases her. Mrs. Johnson was Secretary of the Southern Adirondack Dog Club and was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the St. Mary's Hospital Auxiliary where she would often volunteer her time. "Mammy", as she was affectionately known by family and friends, enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also loved her beloved dogs and her time boating with the Mayfield Yacht Club. Her loving family includes her daughter Linda Richard Wert of Amsterdam, her grandchildren, Traci Robert Sarabia of Amsterdam, Jason Krystal Wert of Green Island and Evan Sonja Wert of Latham, and her great-grandchildren, Kylie Wert, Lucas Sarabia, Jadon Wert, Mason Sarabia, Kamdon Wert and Julianna Wert. Funeral Services will be at 1:00PM on Saturday, May 30 at Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam with Rev. Greg DeSalvatore, officiating. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Amsterdam. The family will receive relatives and friends prior to Services on Saturday from 12:00 to 1:00PM at the funeral home.
