Obituary of Bernard B. Grosse

Mr. Bernard B."Bernie" Grosse, 81, of Erie Street, Fultonville, NY passed away Thursday evening June 11th, 2009 at the Mountain Valley Hospice Home, Steele Ave, Gloversville, with his loving family at his side. Born on March 1, 1928 in Hastings on the Hudson, NY , a son of the late George and Adele Maher Grosse. He was a lifelong area resident and attended local schools. Mr. Grosse was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War. He served the U.S. Army's 1st Cavalry Division's Fifth Regiment. Grosse's unit went ashore in July of 1950. His regiment along with another completely crushed three North Korean divisions early in the war near Waegwan. They also made a historic capture of the vital North Korean capital city of Pyongyang and freed an encircled United Nations division at Chipyong-ni. Mr. Grosse received 2 Bronze service stars for his service. On September 4th, 1954 he married Barbara L. Stevens Grosse. She passed away on December 4th, 2007. She was the love of his life and together they traveled, enjoyed gardening and spending time with their grandchildren. Bernie was a hard working man with many different jobs. He began on a farm in Minaville, then he owned and operated Grosse Brothers Pools in both Fonda and Amsterdam with his brother Richard. Bernie also drove both school bus and charter bus and spent many years as a Truck Driver for Amsterdam Knitting Mills and Roadway Trucking. Bernie was excellent with heavy machinery but retired early in the 1980's due to illness. In his spare time he also plowed for the Jackson & Betz Funeral Home on Main St. Bernie was a proud community member and enjoyed seeing all those he loved while riding his scooter through the village. He was an active member of the Fultonville Reformed Church and was a church Elder and a Past President of the Consistory. Bernie was also a member of the Fultonville Lodge #531 F & AM. Mr. Grosse was a honorable and humble man. While he enjoyed woodworking, gardening, sports and traveling; his greatest love was his family. Bernie's first thoughts always went towards the needs of others and his proudest achievements were his three daughters. He set very high standards for himself and his moral values were admired by all. He set such an example as a "true gentleman". Bernard is survived by three daughters, Bobbie Jean Thomas Flint of Fonda, Jackielynn Grosse of Fultonville and Melanie Anthony Amatetti of Monroe, NY; a brother, Richard Grosse of Fultonville. Five beloved grandchildren, Thomas Flint, Matthew Flint, Kristen Flint, Kallie-Anne Amatetti and Mark Amatetti. Nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. He was predeceased by a brother, Robert Grosse. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday June 16th, 2009 at 11:00A.M. at the Fultonville Reformed Church, Corner of State Hwy 5s and Main Street, Fultonville with the Rev. Dr. R.W. Williams presiding. Burial will take place in the Chuctanunda Cemetery, Minaville with full military honors. Calling hours will be held on Monday June 15th, 2009 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the Jackson & Betz Funeral Home, 15 Main Street, Fultonville where the Fultonville Lodge #531F & AM will hold a service at 6:15PM.
