Obituary of Robert C. Decker
Robert C. Decker, of East Fourth Ave, Johnstown, NY passed away Monday evening at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady.
Born in Simpson, Pennsylvania on April 3, 1933 the son of Elmer W. and Dorothy M. Hauser Decker. He was a lifelong area resident and attended local schools. Mr. Decker was a member of the National Guard Company G and C 105th Infantry 27th Division serving during the Korean War and was later made Chaplain in 1987.
He was employed as a Mason for many years and was employed by the Altamont Tile Company. He later was employed as a custodian for the Lexington Center in Johnstown, NY. He last worked for the Johnstown Police Department as a School Crossing Guard before he was forced to retire do to ill health.
Mr. Decker was a life member of the Aetna Engine Company in Fultonville NY. He also was one of the founding members of New York State's first disabled Scout Troop, Lexington Explorer Troop # 5. Robert was of the Christian Faith. He enjoyed gardening and spending time with his beloved grandchildren.
He was married to Ethel Rowback Decker on February 14th, 1975. In addition to his loving wife survivors include daughters, Louise Chamberlain Larry of Johnstown, NY, Jaynee GonzalesJose of Johnstown, NY and Susan Picard Michael of North Carolina. Two sons, Robert D. Decker and Dale R. Decker along with a daughter Nonagail Pfeiffer. Two brothers, Douglas Decker of Niceville, FL. and Leroy Decker of Randolph, NY. Two sisters, Leona Gill of Fultonville, NY and Ethel Skiver of Little Valley, NY. Seven grandchildren, Scott Chamberlain, Todd Chamberlain, Daniel Schuttig, Christopher Schuttig, Jose "Jay" Gonzales Jr., Douglas Picard and Amanda Hernandez. 8 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins survive.
He was predeceased by brothers Edward and James Decker, and sisters Joanne and Donnalee Decker.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday July 23rd, 2009 at 1:00P.M. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave, Amsterdam with Robert Kilmer Presiding. Interment will follow with military honors in Fairview Cemetery, Amsterdam. The family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday July 23rd, 2009 prior to the funeral service from 11:00AM to 1:00PM at the funeral home.
