Obituary of Sophie E. Johnson

Sophie E. Johnson, 84, of McClellan Avenue, passed away Saturday evening at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam. Born May 15, 1925 in Amsterdam, NY, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Antonia Nevadumaskas Meskauskas. She was a graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School and the Colonna Beauty School in Schenectady. Since 1961, Sophie owned and operated the Profile Beauty Salon on East Main Street and worked as a beautician until the age of 79. She was a parishioner of the former St. Casimir's Roman Catholic Church. Sophie was awarded Best Jitterbug Dancer of her high school class and won a hair color competition at the Concord Hotel in the Catskills in 1963. She was very proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved to knit for her family and she was an avid Yankees fan. On October 1, 1949, she married Jack Johnson who passed away April 20, 1986. She was also predeceased by brothers, Benjamin, John, Peter and Richard, and a sister, Stephanie. Survivors include her loving family, two sons, Arlen Amy Jane Johnson of Santa Fe, NM and Mark Gina Johnson of Amsterdam; two daughters, Kathy Joseph Natale of Guilderland and Frankie Sam Greco of Sacandaga Park, NY; a sister-in-law, Stella Meskoskey of Amsterdam; eleven grandchildren: J. Marco Johnson, Dino Johnson, Antonio Johnson, Cristiana Johnson, Larry Natale, Marci Natale, Christopher Greco, Karen Jordan, Caylen Johnson, Loren Johnson and Jacob Johnson; six great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial which well be celebrated on Wednesday, December 9 at 11am at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, East Main Street, Amsterdam. Burial will take place in St. Casimir's Cemetery, Amsterdam. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday from 5 to 7pm at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Sophie's memory to the St. Mary's Hospital Foundation, 427 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, NY 12010.
