Obituary of Barbara J. Smith

Mrs. Barbara J. Smith, 83, formerly of Market St. and Hillcrest Spring Assisted Living Facility in Amsterdam, passed away Sunday December 6, 2009 at the E. L. Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility following a long illness. Born in Amsterdam, NY on January 6, 1926 a daughter of Alfred M. and Beatrice Barber Smith. She was a graduate of Amsterdam High School and lived in various locations around the country. During World War II she was employed by the U.S. Navy Depot in Scotia NY. Mrs. Smith had many occupations in the Naval Department due to her husband's career with Navy. Barbara and her husband also lived in San Diego, California, Guantanamo Bay Cuba, Maine, Virginia, New Jersey and the U.S. Marshal Islands. She returned back to Amsterdam in 1986. She was of the Protestant Faith and at one time a member of the former Emmanuel Presbyterian Church in Amsterdam. Barbara married Floyd B. Smith Jr. on September 4, 1950. He passed away on January 27, 2003. She is survived by her brother, William M. Smith of Amsterdam, NY and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death also by a sister Shirley Roman. Funeral services will be held on Friday December 11, 2009 at 1:00P.M. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave, Amsterdam, N.Y. with Rev. Daniel J. Wheeler presiding. Interment will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, Tribes Hill, NY. Memorial contributions may be made to the United Presbyterian Church, 25 Church St., Amsterdam, NY 12010.
