Obituary of Katherine L. Sandy

Katherine Leggiero Sandy, 91, formerly of Center Street, passed away peacefully Wednesday afternoon at the Edward L. Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility after a long illness. Born in Rotterdam Jct. on January 29, 1918, she was the last surviving daughter of Pietro Antonio and Maddelena Derresco Leggiero. She lived in Amsterdam for most of her life and was employed for a time at Mohawk Carpets. For over forty five years, she along with her late husband, owned and operated Sandy's News on Center Street. Katherine cherished the many friends that she saw there daily and was always there to greet people with a loving smile. She also volunteered for a time at the Montgomery County Infirmary, now the River Ridge Living Center. A lifelong parishioner of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Roman Catholic Church, she was a member of its Christian Women's Society. On June 5, 1938, she was united in marriage to George Sandy. Her beloved husband predeceased her on Feb. 9, 1999. She leaves many nieces, nephews and cousins. Services are Monday morning at 10:30 am at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, followed by the Mass Of Christian Burial at 11:15 am at Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Church. FR. Lawrence J. Decker, celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Fort Johnson. A calling hour will begin at 9:30 am Monday prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, it was Katherine's request that contributions be made to Mt. Carmel Memorial Fund in care of the funeral home office.
