Obituary of Donald L. Kenny
Donald Lyle Kenny quietly passed away on April 3, 2017 after a yearlong battle with Cancer. Mr. Kenny was born on November 13, 1935 and grew up in New Rochelle, New York. He was raised by a single mother and was the youngest of five children. When his middle brother was killed during the Korean War, he left high school at 16 and joined the Marine Corps. As a Marine, a majority of Mr. Kenny's career was as an Infantry man serving with Force Reconnaissance. He served at the Marine Corps Barracks at 8th & I Street and was part of the Honor Guard detail during the dedication of the USS Arizona Memorial. He also received a personal Letter of Accommodation from President Kennedy for supervising the guarding of the original Mona Lisa. Throughout his career he received numerous military awards and accolades. In 1966 while serving in South Vietnam Mr. Kenny was recommended for the Silver Star, our nation's third highest award for valor and received two Purple Hearts for being wounded in combat. As a result of his wounds, he was medically discharged from the Marines after serving honorably for 14 years.
After moving to Gloversville, he worked for both Coleco Industries and Hannaford's Supermarkets. Mr. Kenny helped to plan and organize the Youth Soccer movement of the late 1970's and was an active member of Church of the Holy Spirit and its Social Spirits group. He also served as a Eucharistic Minister for a number of years. He is pre-deceased by the love of his life Lori with whom he was married for 51 years. He was a father to Donall Kenny of Colorado, Susan Raiano of New York and Scott Kenny of Nebraska. And he was a proud and loving grandfather to Donny, Katie, Patch, Kyle and Chayce.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday, April 7th at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St; Gloversville, where a prayer service will follow at 4:00 p.m. with the Rev. Donald Czelusniak officiating.
Cremation will follow with final interment to take place at a later date at G.B. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville.
