Obituary of Matthew R. Smith

Matthew R. "TEX" Smith, 34, of Steele Avenue Extension, Gloversville, passed away suddenly on Monday, January 11, 2010, as the result of a motor vehicle accident. His beloved dog "Doc" was at his side. Born, May 31, 1975, in Watertown, NY, he was the son of Michael J. Smith and Karen A. Mulcahy Godfrey. He was employed at B.T.A. Trucking, in Fort Johnson for the past eight years. His passion was trucking. He loved the trucks, traveling and meeting new people along the way. He enjoyed farming and animals; TEX was the proud owner of five horses. He looked forward to coming home on the weekends to show them, especially "Shelly". He was a member of the American Quarter Horse Association. Matt had served with the United States Navy until he was Honorably Discharged due to an injury. He enjoyed cooking and spending time with his family and friends. He will be remembered by all for his positive attitude, great personality and love for life. His family includes his parents, Michael Smith and Karen Godfrey; three sisters, Michelle Chris Laxson of Belgrade, MT, Rebeka Godfrey of Orlando, FL and Katelyn Godfrey of Portland, ME; two nephews, Jack and Townes and a niece Chloe. His "Gloversville Family" includes his Best Friend Andy Wenskoski, Janice and Paul Wenskoski, Kari Bezio, Chris and Jennifer Wenskoski; two nephews, Christian and Riley Wenskoski; Peter Buanno Sr. and the rest of his B.T.A. Trucking Family. Funeral services will be held 11:00am Saturday at Jackson & Betz Funeral Home, 15 Main Street, Fultonville, followed at 12:00 noon by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Cecilia's Roman Catholic Church in Fonda. Relatives and friends may call from 9 to 11 am prior to the funeral service at the funeral home.
